Top Five Best Comics Of The Year
(part 2)
As a continuation of Mike’s post of the top 5 best titles of the year, here are my top 5 picks. As many comic enthusiasts have already figured out, there are way too many good books. Unfortunately there’s not enough money or time for each one. Here are a few you should check out.
Silver Surfer Vol. 1: New Dawn
Mike Allred puts the rad in Norrin Radd with his 60’s style artwork, alongside favorite Spider-Man writer Dan Slott. In simplest form, this story arc is basically “Silver Surfer In Love”, and comic fans such as myself are loving the ride. He meets an Earth Girl by the name of Dawn Greenwood, who he brings with him on his adventures. The universe is an amazing place but what’s the point of being in it, without someone to share it with. Also, be sure to check out All-New Doop as well if you love this story line.
Superman/Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Power Couple (The New 52)
Though I’m not always a fan of Superman or Wonder Woman by themselves, for some reason them together just works. Written by Charles Soule with beautiful artwork by Tony Daniel, the story focuses on the relationship between Clark and Diana. They go through the struggles as a power couple when fighting crime or just going out in public with their secret identities.
Written by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman with art by Paul Azaceta, Outcast is Kirkman’s take on exorcism. Kyle Barnes has a special gift of casting out demons, beginning around the time of his mother’s death. With the success of Walking Dead, Showtime did not hesitate to already option the comic for a series. One of Kirkman’s best in a while.
The Punisher Vol. 1: Black and White
Written by Nathan Edmondson and Mitch Gerads, this new Punisher series is probably the smartest and most political Punisher series in a long time. Edmondson really brings out the resourcefulness of Frank Castle when fighting bad guys and getting out of rough predicaments. He crosses paths with Black Widow for a few of the story lines, which also comes out monthly at the same time. I would recommend that book as well, which is also written by Edmondson with art by Phil Noto.
Written by Scott Snyder and Jock, the Rooks family movies to a new town to escape the terrible events involving their daughter Sailor. Wytches is a horror story with great character development, not just illustrations drawn for the sake of shock value. Like Outcast, Synder and Jock give their take on witches. You’ll find all the classic elements of a horror movie such as eerie shadows and creeky noises. It’s no wonder Wytches has already been acquired for a movie deal with New Regency with Plan B to produce. Nab a copy at your local store if you can.
