Holiday Gift Guide 2012: Top Geek Girl Gifts

by Iris Mori, Reporter

Sure.  You know the online sites that you want her to shop at for you, but have you planned for the perfect geek gift for her?  Has she not been dropping hints, and expects you to just…know what to leave under the tree?  Not to worry, put aside that paper bag you’re panic-breathing in—there’s still time before the Holidays arrive. Have no fear, for ComicsOnline is here to take the worry out of shopping for your geek girl!

1. Portenzo composition ipad case

This is what they call “Geek Chic”.

If the Geek Girl in your life is a geek of the “standard” variety, she’s probably got everything she needs, and is saving up for the next-gen xbox already.  Who isn’t?   But does she have a snazzy cover for her ipad?  Portenzo’s case is equally functional, snugly embedding your ipad into a gorgeous Maple frame, protecting it from the elements and accidents, and practical (what thief in their right mind would want to steal a composition book?).  One word of warning:  Current Portenzo production time is 14 days, so plan ahead!

2. Shinzi Katoh edamame chopstick rest set

Awww. Too cute to eat (even if it isn’t porcelain)

Have you exhausted the local Japanese goods shop for presents for your Japanophile Geek Girl?  This Shinzi Katoh masterpiece is actually a five piece set—four porcelain “edamame” chopstick rests and their pod, which doubles as a soy sauce dish.  It’s even cuter than it looks in the picture, and is guaranteed to make even the hardened Geek Girl squee.

3. Kate Spade Pride & Prejudice Clutch

It’s a book! It’s a purse! It’s a BookPurseClutch!

If the Geek Girl in your life is a Janeite, she’s probably got every Pride and Prejudice and Zombies edition ever made.  But you can just bet that she doesn’t have one of these: A Kate Spade book clutch shaped like a retro copy of Pride and Prejudice.  Cloth under clear PVC with 14K gold-plated hardware, this baby is designed for the occasional fancy dinner spills or everyday dates.  Definitely a conversation piece your Geek Girl would love, and a stylish way for her to display her Janeite Pride.

4. Gourmet Cake + Limited Edition Coffee or Gourmet Cake + Seasonal Tea set

Not Super Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (say what?) but still perfect with the cake. Really.

Foodie Geek Girls are amongst the most difficult creatures to shop for.  Consider these two ComicsOnline taste-tested and approved food pairings.  (Please, take notes so that you can impress her with your knowledge before she opens the box; we’ve done all the hard work for you)  Pairing one is the Lady M Mille Crepe Cake and De La Paz Autumn Sweater Full Bean Espresso.  The warm vanilla bean custard crème layers and carmelized sugar at the very top of the 20th crepe layer pairs beautifully with the caramel sugar notes and delicate acidity of the multi-region coffee blend.  As for the second pairing, Minamoto Kitchoan Honey Kasutera Cake with Grace Rare Tea 2012 First Flush Darjeeling Super 6000 tea, the honey in the delicately sweet dense-spongy Kasutera cake dances gracefully with the rich floral notes of the premium Darjeeling.  Either pairing will impress, but timing is crucial: As with all food gifts these have limited shelf life, and require a well-timed holiday.

5. Spoonflower welcome kit

If you have a Crafty Geek Girl you need to shop for, have you considered a Spoonflower Gift Certificate?  Gift Certificates, you scoff.  That’s not heartfelt at all, and worse, she’ll yell at me for not putting much thought into her gift, you say.  Think about it.  If she doesn’t know what Spoonflower is (unlikely, but possible), consider a welcome pack—credit towards whatever she wants on the site, plus a sample swatch pack for everything, yes everything, they can custom make for her, from fabrics to wallpaper, and a book of projects.  If she DOES know what Spoonflower is, she likely has explored the site and has quickly run out of funds for her extensive DIY projects, hence…the gift certificate.  Trust us.  She’ll be glad you put so much thought into it.

Over the past year, Iris has slowly been replacing the structure of her body with dark chocolate and Pisco Sours. We're hoping that Costco will have minis of her on sale in time for the holidays. Iris has moved to San Francisco to try and convince us she's really Asian. Still not convinced.
