Movie Review: The Bourne Legacy

by Kendrick Gaussoin, Junior Editor

After 10 years, it may be that the original Bourne Trilogy was only a prequel. We were told The Bourne Ultimatum was the end, but instead it led us to this awesome, sick, fight-filled chase movie. Jason Bourne ended up “dead” in the river at the end of Ultimatum and went off the grid, never to be seen in the sequel.

In The Bourne Legacy, Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner – The AvengersMission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) is a part of the new operation of genetically modified soldiers called Operation Outcome. Jeremy Renner definitely filled his role well with his tough, rugged look and built body. Legacy starts out with Aaron crossing over some mountains to get to the end of some sort of punishment or test. He is trying to get more medication that he needs when he discovers that due to the events in the previous film, the CIA has decided to terminate Operation Outcome and tries to accomplish this by blowing up Cross’ safehouse, Cross is forced to start living up to the Bourne formula and going on the run. The journey to find meds leads Cross to Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz – Constantine, The Mummy) who in classic Bourne fashion is dragged along with Cross for her own protection. Rachel Weisz filled her role well because she plays a really good clueless person. She just has that perfect scared, clueless face.

See? Perfect!

Like its predecessors, The Bourne Legacy is very chase-scene based. There were several car chases, the cool motorcycle chase featuring the stair handrail grind featured in the trailer, which is of course my favorite, then the cool newer Parkour chase scene. The special effects were solid; I really couldn’t discern between the practical effects and the CGI effects because it all looked pretty real. The first hour or so of the movie is a bit long and monotonous but once the movie gets going you will be in for a quick, adrenaline-pumping adventure with …a special something at the end.

Fans of the original Bourne trilogy who aren’t still upset about the lack of Matt Damon, and really any spy action thriller lovers should be pleased with the nonstop action in The Bourne Legacy.

ComicsOnline gives The Bourne Legacy 4 out of 5 handrail grinds.
