Blu-ray Review: The Terminator

I’m going back in time to terminate my housekeeper

by Caleb Paullus, Media Editor

I’ve seen The Terminator a total of 11 times yet never have I seen it in Blu-ray glory. Anyone who hasn’t seen it/own it in its high-definition glory needs to be terminated or at least devoured by a predator. That’s terrible of me to say, some one get me an eraser cause if I’m ever a running man, I don’t want that coming back to haunt me like a 14 year-old love-child.

This movie does action movies right. It does them so good that you’ll need a cigarette after each explosive moment just to calm yourself down.
**POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT**
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, then you might want to skip this paragraph. The film opens on a grim post apocolypic future where humans and robots are at war. For a movie made in 1984, these still pretty fantastic visuals. Immediately we are blasted to the past where it seems a time-traveler, Reese has come back. For what purpose? We don’t know yet. You are introduced to Sarah Connor who doesn’t know how important she is to the future of mankind and a little later, the Terminator. When the Terminator comes back from the future and rips the heart out of some street punk for their clothes, you know who the bad guy is…80’s Fashion him. Now both Reese and the Terminator are scouring the city for Sarah Connor, Reese trying to find the right one to save, the Terminator killing them all. The build up of the chase with the soundtrack is nervewrecking and exciting. The rest of the movie is gun shots, death, screaming and running followed by an intesnse climax and cliffhanger. Really, you should watch this then Terminator 2 right after cause they are both so epic.

This blu-ray is unlike the other Terminator blu-rays that exist already (2 others exist: a straight blu-ray and a blu-ray/dvd combo). This is a straight up blu-ray that is packaged in a collectable book. Inside the book you’ll find short biographies on James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn and Linda Hamilton as well as Terminator Trivia and a nice little piece called “Tech Noir: The Dark Side of Techno” by Travis Baker. On top of that nice little book there are some pretty sweet special features.

Highlights
– One of the most epic-ly classic action movies to ever grace your retinas in stunning High-def
– Awesome action sequences
– Killer soundtrack

Lowlights
– Do we really need three blu-ray versions?

Special Features
– Deleted Scenes: These for the most part were pretty good. If you loved the Terminator but haven’t seen them yet, they are worth the watch.
–  Terminator: A Retrospective: This is a “making of” featurette which I found to be fascinating. It goes over what a low budget it was filmed with, how James Cameron came up with the idea, how some of the special effects were created and a lot more. Cinephiles will eat this up.

Overview
It is no lie that The Terminator is a fantastic movie. Action packed, great special effects, killer actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger (Predator, Running Man, Commando) and Linda Hamilton (Chuck) and a really fun soundtrack make this a must have for action lovers, robot lovers and lovers with multiple secret lovers and love-children. Seriously go buy it, because its one of those movies you can watch over and over and not ever really get sick of.
