DVD Review: Swingtown: The First Season

The CBS summer show Swingtown is a fine example of how excellent shows sometimes never get a chance to really shine. It was heartbreaking for fans of this interesting slice of 70’s goodness to hear it was canceled after only one season. Originally intended to be a mid-season replacement, the Writer’s Strike caused Swingtown to be put off until the summer, and perhaps that was the death blow before it even began. Set in the mid-seventies, the show explores romance, the destruction of ‘traditional’ marriage, friendship, class differences, coming of age growth, and of course, swingers. Now Swingtown: The First Season is out for DVD, and the tragedy is that this will be the complete series as well.

DVD Review: The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)

“The universe grows smaller every day, and the threat of aggression by any group, anywhere, can no longer be tolerated. There must be security for all, or no one is secure. Now, this does not mean giving up any freedom, except the freedom to act irresponsibly.”

DVD Review: The Polar Express presented in 3-D

This is the 3-D version of what I believe is one of most magical Christmas movies of all time. The digital effects alone are amazing (the film uses live motion capture technology), and the story is good enough to re-kindle the spirit of Christmas in even the most cynical adult.

DVD Review: 300 Limited 3-Disc Edition

“THIS. IS. SPARTA!”

Frank Miller is known for many things: His impressive story Sin City, saving the Batman Franchise with the definitive Batman story The Dark Knight Returns and his beautiful take on the tale of Leonidas and the Warriors of Sparta in the graphic novel 300. In 2007, Miller’s 300 made the jump to the big screen with the help of Director Zack Synder. Now the epic film 300 has been re-released on DVD in a new limited edition set!

Blu-ray & DVD Review: Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder is an action movie set in the Vietnam war set within a comedy of the same name. Whether you’re talking about the comedy or the war drama within, Tropic Thunder is an all-star extravaganza that satires stardom, war movies, and really all of Hollywood.

Ben Stiller (producer of The Ruins) stars as Tugg Speedman as who in turn stars as Four Leaf Tayback. Speedman is the ultimate action hero whose fame has seen better days.

Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda) stars as Jeff Portnoy who in turn stars as Fats. Portnoy is a heroin addict whose fame is largely based on movies featuring himself playing multiple roles in fat suits.

DVD Review: Wanted (Two Disc Special Edition)

I didn’t know that God was really that vengeful. I’m sure that everyone would be surprised to find out that God headed up a group of assassins. Ok, not really God but Morgan Freeman, who has played God on occasion. He is the head of an organization of assassins in the movie Wanted. It came out during the summer, and was based on a limited series comic book by Mark Millar, but since you are on ComicsOnline, I shouldn’t have to tell you that. Now, Wanted (Two Disc Special Edition) is out on DVD.

In world where danger is all around us there is only one man brave enough (or drunk enough) to save us…HANCOCK! Will Smith’s Superhero Adventure Hancock is now available on DVD and Blu-ray! Hancock is the story of a man trying to find his place in a world that has total disregard for him. He wants to help, but he is a big screw-up. …With powers equivalent to Superman.
