DVD Review Global Metal
It’s loud. It’s rebellious. It’s obnoxious. Most authority figures don’t like it, and religious leaders believe it’s the moral ruination our youth. And it is the global phenomenon commonly known as heavy metal music. Global you say, how can that be with all the countries that are so restrictive? And so many different types of music styles. That’s what Sam Dunn thought too.
Sam Dunn, anthropologist and metal head, didn’t believe it either, so after his first documentary, Metal: A Headbangers Journey, elicited a global response he decided to film another documentary to investigate just how widespread this phenomenon is. So Sam, together with director Scot McFayden, head off on a multi-country jaunt to track down heavy metal music in the most un-metal places.
DVD Review: Super Capers
The Superhero genre parody Super Capers is now available on DVD.
After wannabe superhero Ed Gruberman (Lois and Clark's Justin Whalin) attempts to save a damsel in distress, he is sued by the mugger (played by Clint Howard). The judge decides to side with Gruberman but insists that he be trained by the Super Capers program for lacking superheroes.
He is driven to the Super Capers program by the infamous "Man-Bat" (played by Batman's Adam West) who now runs a taxi service using the Man-Batmobile. Once at the compound, Gruberman meets the rest of the team which includes: Sarge (Tommy Listner), Will Powers (Chuck's Ryan McPartlin), Felicia Freeze (Danielle Harris), and Puffer Boy (Ray Griggs). Can these struggling superheroes get it together in time to save the world?
DVD Review: Watchmen Director’s Cut 2-Disc Set
Watchmen: Director's Cut is now available on DVD!
Watchmen is a off the beaten path tale about a group of former costume crusaders who have split up after many years of serving together as comrades in arms and are now having to face each other again due to someone or something killing off one of their former members. It plays out much like a detective noir tale with superhero trappings along the edges. It is important for the viewer to understand going into the film that this is not your typical superhero film as Watchmen is something completely different. This is an extremely graphic story and they don't pull any punches (or hold back on the blue genitailia).
DVD Review: Spectacular Spider-Man The Complete First Season
The Complete First Season of the Spectacular Spider-Man is now available on DVD in one amazing set!
Now you can enjoy all 13 episodes of the hit animated series any time you want. Season 2 has just started airing here in the United States, so you might want to use this as a refresher before diving into the new season.
One of the most consistent shows on television, the Spectacular Spider-Man sets the bar high for all the competition. Armed with an extremely talented cast and crew, the show has proven itself to be one of the best written, most entertaining, and overall faithful adaptations of the Spider-Man mythos.
DVD Review: Slayers the First Three Seasons
Slayers is based on a Light Novel and manga of the same name that premiered way back in 1995. The hand drawn animation is beautifully done and the English voice cast did a great job. An interesting bit of trivia is that almost the entire main cast went on to be in Pokemon when that show was brought over here in '98. Some are more noticeable than others and most of the time I couldn't help but add "Ash" when Gourry Gabriev (the second star of the show) talks. Gourry is voiced by Eric Stuart, who went on to play Brock and James. DVD Review: Fullmetal Alchemist: Premium OVA Collection
It's finally happened! Fullmetal Alchemist has reappeared with it's Premium OVA Collection! This Premium collection contains four ACTION PACKED adventures: Interactive Experience, Live Action Featurette, Chibi Wrap Party, and the short "Kids"! DVD Review: Darker Than Black Volume 6
The Darker Than Black saga comes to an end in Volume 6, but the story of the Contractors and the Syndicate is left open for more to come. The high drama is clear evidence that the Japanese take their Anime seriously. The imagery and plot stand out and reflect a very eastern mindset and general life philosophy. DVD Review: The Middleman: The Complete Series
I have been surrounded by comics all of my life. My grandfather was a cartoonist during World War II. My family went to Comic-Con number zero. This has been a part of our lives. We read the western comics, the sci-fi comics, but most of all the superhero comics. So when I found out that The Middleman would be a series on ABC Famiily, I jumped at the chance to watch it. It turned out to be the best new series when it premiered, and I watched every show. It was everything that I wanted a modern superhero show to be, funny, Smart, heroic. All with a sense of self, and that which came before it. This was the new hero show. DVD Review: Big Man Japan
A reluctant hero, who is not seen as a hero, and is starving to be a hit on Japanese TV. Are you confused yet? I was very confused for the first 10 minutes of this insane but outstanding movie. This is the most bizarre adult adaptation of a Japanese Monster movie I have ever seen. Taking the entire genre and wrapping it into a documentary is brilliant and hilarious to boot. Highlights This film opens as a documentary of Big Sato, or Big Man Japan. He is an everyday human that can transform himself into a giant when monsters decide to drop by and reek a little havoc. The first 10 minutes set the entire story up. It provides a glimpse into the mind of this strange convoluted man. There several great references to things getting bigger when needed and they become more relevant later in the movie. DVD Review: Kyo Kara Maoh!, the Complete Season two Set
“Maybe my fifteen years as a dateless wonder have all led up to this day”
DVD Review: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Season 1.1
G.I. Joe may be solely responsible for the recent economic downturn. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Season 1.1 revolves around the G.I. Joes and their terrorist counterparts, Cobra, developing expensive new ways to either take over the world or prevent world domination. This is a great way to reconnect with the overly-aggressive little kid you once were or expose your own child to one of the building blocks that made you who you are. Your child will most likely be so inspired that he will grow up to join the army, only to realize that he is not allowed to dress in whatever eccentric garb he pleases while using a custom set of weapons that have been designed to match his over-the-top persona (this will inevitably lead to years of turmoil between you two).
DVD Review: Gungrave, the Complete Set
Gungrave: The Complete Set covers the adult years of Brandon Heat and Harry McDowel and their climb up (and down) the ranks of the Millennion Mafia group. Highlights Leverage: The First Season DVD SetTNT has really started to come up with creative original series, and right now they have some of the hottest TV: The Closer, Raising The Bar, Saving Grace, and one of their newer shows Leverage. What appealed to me about Leverage from the first time I saw it was the Robin Hood-like pretense, and the quirkiness of the five main characters. They are each memorable in their own way and add just enough to the show for it to be a hit ensemble cast. The show is premiering its second season on July 15th, and just in time the first season is being officially released on July 14th. This is the perfect time to pick up the first season and learn all about this show before it starts again, and for you fans to get a happy reminder of this adventure Ocean's Eleven-esque show. |
