Blu-ray Review: Hotel Rwanda

“I think if people see this footage they’ll say, “Oh my God that’s horrible,” and then go on eating their dinners.”

by Brenda Waldrop, Media Editor

Sadly, as chronicled in the epic film Hotel Rwanda, that’s precisely what most of the world did.  In April of 1994 they sat back, eating their dinners and living their lives, while they watched as a genocide claiming the lives of over 800,000 Rwandans raged in a country that most people had barely heard of.  Based on the true story of Paul Rusesabagina, expertly portrayed by Don Cheadle, who saved over 1,200 Tutsi’s during the 100 day genocide in 1994.

Blu-ray Review: Benny & Joon

Thanks for the couch. Um… Mike made me sleep under the sink.

By Caleb Paullus

Not being a Johnny Depp fan – oh who am I kidding, Depp is a dreamboat, even when he is portraying an eccentric cinemaphile in this romantic comedy film. Benny & Joon, originally released in 1993, is now digitally remastered in high resolution blu-ray glory! You can see every beautiful pore on Johnny Depp’s gorgeous face. I know what you are thinking, “Caleb has a boy-crush on Johnny Depp”. No that’s not the case, I’m actually the one that got a restraining order placed on him before he got one on me.

Blu-ray Review: Mad Men – Season Four

You may have to wait until 2012 for Season Five of the acclaimed AMC series Mad Men to return, but you can catch up on the Blu-ray edition of Mad Men – Season Four right now!

Mathew Weiner has not just lovingly and meticulously recreated the fall of 1964 and rest of l965 in the Fourth Season of Mad Men. He has created a thirteen hour movie.  As it languidly unfolds it provides a window into the past giving us clues regarding the directions that the characters who inhabit this world are going to take.  It just takes time, and alot of it. By the time it concludes, everyone and everything in this corner of universe will be accounted for.

Blu-ray Review: Firebreather

Cartoon Network has been very hit-or-miss when it comes to creating new animated franchises. Who can forget such classics as the ingenious Megas XLR or Samurai Jack, but who wants to remember such bombs as Squirrel Boy? Firebreather, Cartoon Network’s newest experiment, falls into the latter of the aforementioned groups. Primed to be a backdoor pilot for an ongoing series, and CN’s first full CGI film, Firebreather is a very interesting specimen, and it is now available on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray Review: Venture Bros The Complete Season Four

Now maybe I got a little intoxicated before starting this review, but I don’t think my opinion would have changed in the slightest: The Venture Brothers Season Four Blu-ray is the most concentrated source of awesome that money can buy. I am 90% sure that isn’t the whiskey talking, and is instead my unadulterated devotion to this genius series. If you are a fan of comics, science fiction, or anything that uses the word “adventure” in its genre tag, you probably already know about The Venture Brothers from their first three excellent seasons. If not, you should. Look into it now. They are on Blu-ray (and DVD)!

Blu-ray Review: Hereafter

Death, and what happens after we die, is a very deep (and common) question that remains a big mystery for all of us. Is there anything out there? Is there any way for us to possibly know? These are the questions posed in Hereafter, the new release from director Clint Eastwood and Warner Bros Pictures.

We are treated to three (barely) intertwined stories about three lives being affected by death and how the characters deal with it. Matt Damon plays a retired psychic who has turned away from his gift of talking with the deceased. A French television reporter named Marie (Cécile de France), who is covering a news story in Thailand, gets caught up in a tsunami and can’t escape.
