Blu-ray & DVD Review: Rome: The Complete Series

There are some work collaborations that just sound like genius from the get go, and HBO pairing with BBC to create a dramatic historical rendition of Ancient Rome was one of them. The show Rome caused history buffs to drool, literature snobs to squeal, and everyone else to think 'lots of sex, nudity, violence, and an epic bromance. We're so in.' Unfortunately after two seasons it was cancelled due to the costs of keeping such a vibrant and accurate series alive. Now Rome: The Complete Series is out for Blu-ray and DVD, and this is your best chance of seeing this spectacular series from beginning to end for a reasonable price.

Anime Blu-ray Review: WitchBlade, The Complete Series

West meets East, and tide has begun to turn, or has it? WitchBlade is a well-franchised American comic that made it's way across the Pacific to find a new life by the hands of the artists at Gonzo Studio. In this version, the heroine is a kinder, gentler woman who is all about being a hapless mother, but still the all encompassing Mother figure.  The story of a woman cursed with the ultimate power, a young daughter with a mysterious past, and some powerful entities after the WitchBlade itself.

Blu-ray Review: Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

The Cylons were created by Man.
They rebelled.
There are many copies.
And they have…A PLAN.

These words scrolled across our television screens throughout the run of the series Battlestar Galactica. Now, following the amazing ending of the series, the team behind the show has released a new Direct to DVD (and Blu-ray) movie entitled The Plan. This film, directed by series star Edward James Olmos, was intended to show the Cylon's point of view during the destruction of the colonies and provide new insight into the series. Unfortunately for us fans, The Plan feels more like a glorified clip show with very little revelation than the show that we have seen thrive and encapsulate our attention for years.

Anime Blu-ray Review: Afro Samurai

Afro Samurai: Season 1 Director's Cut is a traditional tale of a lone ronin wandering the countryside of a weird techno-feudal Japan, searching for the man who killed his father.  Oh, and he's black.

Hip hop culture has long embraced the kung-fu and gangster genres for their violence and hypermasculinity (e.g. veneration of Scarface, the Wu Tang Clan), who have in turn incorporated African-American motifs into their work (The Matrix films, lamentable blackface music acts in Japan) for a perceived infusion of soul/cool.
Holy Shit.

Blu-ray Review: Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs Diamond Edition

In 1934, when Marge Champion was 14, she was approached by the Hyperion Studios to dress in a mock-up Snow White costume and become the live-action model for animators to study and draw inspiration for their upcoming release, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Over the next year, she posed and danced, creating not only the Snow White character, but also what would ultimately become the signature style of every Disney Princess to follow. With her famous red, blue, and yellow dress with the tall white collar, jet black hair and pale white skin, Snow White has become a highly recognizable symbol of the Walt Disney Company alongside the castle image and of course, Mickey Mouse.

Blu-ray Review: Van Helsing

Since the dawn of film, there have been many many attempts to bring the story of Dracula to life on the silver screen from Nosferatu, to the more well known films such as Universal's Dracula starring Bela Lugosi and Bram Stoker's Dracula (Many of which, including this reviewer, think is the most accurate adaptation done in film thus far). Once again Hollywood has decided to try its hand at redoing the ol' Dracula mythos with Van Helsing, only this time hot off the heels of movies like Underworld, this version of the tale takes a more gothic action popcorn flick approach to the timeless story.

Blu-ray Review: An American Werewolf in London

David regains consciousness in the hospital to the care of Nurse Alex Price (Jenny Agutter – Child’s Play 2), who also takes him home for further recovery when he is discharged from the hospital and has no where to go at the time. David begins having strange cravings and visits from Jack, who tries to convince David to kill himself so he can move on. To make matters worse, David begins waking up in strange places naked, and Jack's visits are accompanied by other apparitions that aren’t happy with him.

An American Werewolf in London is an excellent movie that mixes an appropriate style of comedy to compliment the horror, but what would you expect from John Landis (Animal House). Add the cutting edge special effects that still hold up today, and you have fun flick with a pleasant mix of laughs and gasps.
