SDCC Fringe Panel

Fringe had quite a fanbase at San Diego Comic Con this year, because not only was the line very long and the room completely full, but the fans were very much a part of the panel itself. The Fringe crew thought it would be fun to have a trivia game running, so that for every question a fan asked them, they asked a question of the audience. They seemed remarkably surprised every time a very enthusiastic fan screamed out the answer, faster than they had time to recognize it! The questions got progressively more difficult and detailed, yet the fans came through every time. That speaks more to the loyalty of their viewers than anything else at the panel, and the Fringe cast seemed very pleased.

Leverage: The First Season DVD Set

TNT has really started to come up with creative original series, and right now they have some of the hottest TV: The Closer, Raising The Bar, Saving Grace, and one of their newer shows Leverage. What appealed to me about Leverage from the first time I saw it was the Robin Hood-like pretense, and the quirkiness of the five main characters. They are each memorable in their own way and add just enough to the show for it to be a hit ensemble cast. The show is premiering its second season on July 15th, and just in time the first season is being officially released on July 14th. This is the perfect time to pick up the first season and learn all about this show before it starts again, and for you fans to get a happy reminder of this adventure Ocean's Eleven-esque show.

Saving Grace Season Two DVD Review

TNT has started to become a real name in television, due to its rising strength in original television such as The Closer, Raising the Bar, and Saving Grace. It's the latter that I got a chance to check out, and while the only disc offered was the fourth one with the special features, I know the show itself to give you a good view of Saving Grace Season Two, which is now out for DVD.

DVD Review: Taken

When I think of Liam Neeson, I usually think of the gentle voice of Aslan, or criminal mastermind Ra's Al Ghul, or the tragic widower in Love Actually. I could name fantastic roles of his for hours, stretching everywhere from the Star Wars prequels through to the Oscar-winning Schindler's List. This is an actor who gets around in every aspect of the industry, and every genre as well. So when I tell you that he's barely recognizable in Taken, I mean it. He looks the exact same; same graying hair and soft eyes, same calm power and control, but he's something more. He's the guy you never want to cross, the man who will torture and kill whoever he needs to, and man is watching it both painful and riveting. Action looks good on you, Mr. Neeson.

Fanboys DVD Review

"I love the feeling of fresh air on my naked breasts."

By now the anticipation behind the Star Wars prequel series has long since passed, with a huge mixture of reactions from fans and non-fans alike. Love them or hate them, the original feeling before Episode 1 came out was that of eager, excited anticipation. The Star Wars fanboys were counting down the seconds, getting ready to camp out for the tickets, and it renewed tired arguments about Boba Fett and the Skywalkers.

DVD Review: Nobel Son

There are a lot of excellent movies that fall through the cracks of the theater, either due to bad marketing, general disinterest from the mainstream, or just ignorance of its very existence. Nobel Son may not exactly be an excellent film, nor as brilliant as it probably wanted to be, but it certainly deserved more than the generally negative reviews it received. Screened at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival first, it was picked up a year later for distribution and made about 540k overall. Not great, but at least it didn't die immediately after being slapped in the face, for the movie has more merit than the critics gave it.

DVD Review: Swingtown: The First Season

The CBS summer show Swingtown is a fine example of how excellent shows sometimes never get a chance to really shine. It was heartbreaking for fans of this interesting slice of 70’s goodness to hear it was canceled after only one season. Originally intended to be a mid-season replacement, the Writer’s Strike caused Swingtown to be put off until the summer, and perhaps that was the death blow before it even began. Set in the mid-seventies, the show explores romance, the destruction of ‘traditional’ marriage, friendship, class differences, coming of age growth, and of course, swingers. Now Swingtown: The First Season is out for DVD, and the tragedy is that this will be the complete series as well.
