Advance Review: Aquaman #1

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

The King is back! Aquaman returns for a brand-new solo series as part of DC’s ALL IN initiative, and he couldn’t possibly be in better hands. Fan-favorite writer Jeremy Adams (The Flash, Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps), artist John Timms (Superman: Son of Kal El), colorist Rex Lokus (DCeased: Hope at World’s End), and letterer Dave Sharpe (Green Lantern) are about to launch their collective take on our aquatic hero, and if this first issue is any indication, the adventure is only just getting started. Extremely minor spoilers follow for Aquaman #1.

Following the events of Absolute Power, Arthur has found himself with new abilities as Mera’s hydrokinesis powers were transferred to him during the fall of Amanda Waller. These new powers will come in handy as new monstrous threats emerge from the seven seas, and it seems as though our hero in the orange and green is now perfectly suited to stop them. Can Aquaman find a balance between ruling Atlantis, spending time with his family, and fighting off Kaiju? He’ll have to figure it out fast because the quest to understand “the blue” begins here!

They say ‘go big or go home’, and the Aquaman creative team absolutely came to play. Jeremy Adams is the perfect writer to take on this character (he was the co-writer of Lego Aquaman: Rage of Atlantis after all) and he quickly establishes a solid understanding of Arthur’s voice and those around him. John TImms does some gorgeous work in these pages, and the dramatic entrance that had me sold in the opening panels. This Aquaman is no joke, and the artistic stylings and refreshed character designs pictured here will surely reinforce a feeling of epicness.  Rex Lokus’ colors are the perfect complement to Timm’s designs, balancing the bold with the dramatic as Arthur travels between two-worlds. To no surprise, Dave Sharpe’s lettering is fantastic as always, helping to convey the tone and sense of urgency needed for this big launch.

This launch issue is Aquaman at his finest, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the character for DC’s ALL IN.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
