Comic Book Review: NYX #6

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

Good news everyone! My favorite “From the Ashes Era” continues with the release of NYX #6 from Marvel. Following the epic ending to the series’ opening arc, the mutant community in New York needs a bit of R&R. Luckily for them, musical superstar and resident mutant singer Dazzler is coming to town for one night only. Time to kick back and enjoy some music…right?

Official Synopsis:
PREPARE TO BE DAZZLED… TO DEATH! Congratulations, Kamala Khan — You Got Tickets to Dazzler! ADVISORY: This historic, one-night-only performance will be recorded for theatrical distribution! By entering this concert, you and your little mutant friends consent to being recorded, manipulated and otherwise used by the extradimensional superbeing known as MOJO. Lasers, smoke, flashing lights and other stagecraft will be used against you. Have fun at Dazzler! We hope you survive the experience!

Creative Team:
Writers: Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly
Inkers: Michael Shelfer & Elisabetta D’Amico
Penciler: Michael Shelfer
Color Artist: Raul Angulo
Letter: VC’s Joe Sabino

Out of all of the titles launching in the “From the Ashes Era”, I feel like NYX has been the most original and most consistent. Most of the other X-Titles feel like a return to the hated and feared motif with “classic” teams, while NYX has gathered a non-traditional set of core characters and focused on the fallout of losing Krakoa and how it has impacted the mutant community. This exploration has provided some unique character-centric stories that feel organic and engaging with the new status quo. In this latest issue, our heroes attempt to have a night off and enjoy some music, but find themselves in another scheme thanks to the mysterious Local and “Mr. Friend” aka Mojo! The bad guys are going to think twice after messing with some cranky Dazzler fans…

If you aren’t reading NYX, I would highly recommend adding it to your Marvel pull list. The creative team has clearly demonstrated a deep understanding and love for these particular heroes, and it is great to see the Academy X and more recent X-Universe characters getting more time in the spotlight. NYX feels like a celebration of the younger generation of X-Men, and I can’t wait to get my hands on this book each month.

Rating: ★★★★½

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
