Comic Book Review: Ultimates #6

by Kevin Gaussoin, Editor-in-Chief

Every month, Ultimates (2024) counts down another month as they prepare to fight the return of The Maker. We were almost done assembling, but will this month set them back entirely?

Official Description:
ULTIMATES ASSEMBLE TO TAKE DOWN THE HULK!
The entire roster of THE ULTIMATES unites for the first time in this high octane, climactic conclusion of the first arc! Iron Lad has a plan to defeat the Hulk, the most powerful and imposing member of the Maker’s Council – but has he gotten his team in over their heads?

Yeah, pretty much. I mean, Tony Stark is too cocky in the regular 616 Marvel Universe, right? But here in Marvel Universe 6160, he’s also inexperienced. Is he so inexperienced that he’s going to decimate his newly assembled Ultimates team on their first mission together? Oh by the way, if the cover is any indication, they’re facing off against the strongest Maker’s Council member there is. The Hulk also seems to be wearing an infinity gem and kung fu silks… oh #$%*.

Is this going to be a gory massacre? Are we gonna have to start over with a third Ultimate Marvel Universe after this? Am I gonna need a tissue? Should I read this in the restroom?

Perhaps we should just ask “How are the Ultimates going to get out of this mess?” But even having already read this issue, I don’t know the answer to that. I think a lot of people enjoyed the original Millar/Hitch Ultimates run back in 2000 because they loved the realism found amongst the shock and gore and mortality of those characters. But this one? I was kinda hoping that they’d lean more Hickman or Bendis than Millar or Kirkman.

I hear Kirkman’s old warning “No one is safe” in the writing of Deniz Camp, and as much as it makes me worried or sad, it still has me coming back every month for the next issue. I want these Ultimates to succeed, even if I have no idea how.

Juan Frigeri and Federico Blee illustrate all the tension and action again this month. This time, bringing us so much tension in a panel of characters’ feet that you’d think Rob Liefeld was right there in the room with you. This time, the action goes off like seven capital cities full of gamma bombs. This time, the pathos of that iconic Crisis cover is delivered on the final page with more sadness and dread than ever. Have I said too much?
