Comic Book Review: Ultimate Spider-Man #11 (2024)

by Kevin Gaussoin, Editor-in-Chief

Jonathan Hickman is once again amazing us with Ultimate Spider-Man #11. Sure, this issue is mostly just the webbing that connects the exciting bits, but it’s a welcome and necessary pause between intense events. This issue features David Messina as our primary artist instead of Marco Checchetto, but we still have Matthew Wilson doing the color art, so it hits almost the same.

So what do we have this issue?

Ultimate Spider-Man #11 has three important talking heads discussions with the Sinister Six, MJ, and Uncle Ben, all following a bank heist by Mister Negative and his goons. But you might wonder, “I see that there’s a Felicia Black Cat on the cover. How does she fit into all this? Let’s read the…

Official Description:
WHO IS THE ULTIMATE BLACK CAT? Tensions rise between Spider-Man and Green Goblin in the wake of recent events! And a new villain steps up to the plate! What is her connection to the Black Cat on Kingpin’s Sinister Six?

Actual factual? Felicia’s not at the center of this issue of Ultimate Spider-Man any more than the tensions between Peter and Harry are. She’s in only a single non-speaking, non-action panel in this issue. To address this, I gesture toward Editor Wil Moss and Designer Jay Bowen. Wil, we can see that you are ensuring a good time is had by all here, but Ultimate Spider-Man seems to be suffering from the embarrassing and avoidable maladies that might be described as “Misleading Primary Cover Disease” and “Solicitation Psych Out”.  What can we as fans do to convince you to vaccinate Ultimate Spider-Man versus these problems in the future?

If it seems like I’m digging deep for something to complain about, you’re on the right track. Ultimate Spider-Man continues to be at the top of my reading stack each month and all I really want is more.

And while there’s a similarly sized tiny touch of Spidey/Gobby tension, it’s really not much of a thing this month. The one thing we do get is more time with and wisdom from Uncle Ben. It’s a beautiful scene. Try not to tear up.

Rating: ★★★★½
