Comic Book Review: NYX #4

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

Mutants (and readers) have had a rough time since the loss of Krakoa. Mutants have been dispersed across the globe, but the adventures of the mutant community in New York continue to impress with each passing release of NYX! Academy X superstar Prodigy takes the spotlight in this latest chapter as our heroes face a dangerous threat from one of their own. NYX #4 is now available from Marvel Comics!

Official Synopsis:
Genius. Student. New Mutant. Young Avenger. X-Man. As PRODIGY, David Alleyne has been all these things and more – but now he faces his most difficult challenge yet. Facing down his past and looking his present in the eye, Prodigy must fight to understand what mutant culture really means to those left behind by Krakoa… …and how far he’ll go to protect the mutants of New York City from a devastating – and dangerous – conspiracy of their own.

Creative Team:
Writers: Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly
Artist: Enid Balam
Colorist: Raul Angulo
Letterer: VC’s Joe Sabino

What would you do if paradise slipped through your fingers? As mutants struggle to find a new place for themselves in a world that fears and hates them, it seems like David Alleyne has found a happy medium. Although he has found a teaching role at NYU, it doesn’t mean that he has found balance in his life. With the emergence of “The Krakoan” and the ongoing threat to his people, can David truly leave the world of heroics behind and focus on academic life? And what if that threat is connected to someone from his own past? The New York mutant community reaches a boiling point as The Krakoan and the new Quiet Council launch their plans to reclaim what they once had. Can Ms. Marvel and her friends stop them before it’s too late?

Out of all of the “From the Ashes” books, NYX continues to be my personal favorite. Don’t get me wrong, the flagship X-Men titles are fun, but I was a massive fan of the Academy X series when it came out, and I’m thrilled to see these characters take center stage once again in a book of their own (along with their new friend Ms. Marvel). This isn’t a team book in a traditional sense, and the character-centric stories with a shifting focus between the core cast have allowed for a deeper connection to the plight of our heroes. Jackson and Collin have perfectly captured each of their respective voices and personalities in this series, and the art from Enid and Raul works beautifully to ground the characters in the world of New York.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
