by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

Ever since her first outing as Batgirl in Batman’s “No Man’s Land” story arc, Cassandra Cain has earned the title of Batgirl. This fan-favorite character has appeared in various Bat-Family books over the years, but for her 25th Anniversary, she gets to star in her first solo title in decades. It’s time to suit up and go ALL IN for this next reading experience because Batgirl #1 hits comic stores this week from DC!

Official Synopsis:
Hold on to your seats, clutch your pearls, and rejoice in celebration because Cassandra Cain is taking center stage in her first solo Batgirl series in nearly two decades! When a deadly group of assassins shows up to kill Cassandra, Lady Shiva comes to the rescue, and they must put their complicated past aside and work together as mother and daughter to ensure they make it out alive. Unfortunately, things are never as easy as they seem, and Cass must embark on a jaw-dropping, martial-arts filled adventure in her quest for truth and justice… and revenge?! It’s a Batgirl book like never before, so join us as we dive into the psyche of one of Gotham’s deadliest fighters, while exploring her deep and complex relationship with her mother.

Creative Team:
Writer: Tate Bromal
Artist: Takeshi Miyazawa
Colorist: Mike Spicer
Letterer: Tom Napolitano

Casandra’s relationship with her mother is…complicated at best. When your mom happens to be Lady Shiva, it’s hard to feel the love. With assassins at their doorstep, mother and daughter must put aside their differences as they fight for their lives. Who are the Unburied, and why are they seeking this dynamic duo? It’s ninja assassins galore as they attempt to find a safe haven.

This creative team packed a punch in their first outing. The story felt intimate yet action-packed as the mother/daughter turmoil unraveled across the city. Bromal perfectly captured Cassandra’s voice, while Miyazawa expertly crafted her body language and tone. Spicer’s colors popped with each turn of the page, and Napolitano’s letters boldly framed the narrative.

Batgirl’s solo adventure is a major win for fans, and we hope that this is just the start of her stories with this creative team.

Rating: ★★★★½

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
