Comic Book Review: Radiant Black #30 and #30.5 (SPOILER-FREE)

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

It all comes down to this.

Over the last three years, the creative team behind Radiant Black have been building to the conclusion of “The Catalyst War”, and it has been truly epic. Readers have been gifted with a rather unique experience, as the battle has been waged across two concurrent timelines, with each featuring a different hero dawning the garb of the titular hero. By the end of today, you will know if Nathan or Marshall won the fan vote to remain Radiant Black (#TeamNathan). Sacrifices must be made, and now is the time to get your copies of Radiant Black #30 and #30.5!

Official Synopsis: Radiant Black #30
THE CATALYST WAR CONTINUES. Pieces fall into place. Endless possibilities collapse. The end of the world is at hand.

Official Synopsis: Radiant Black #30.5
Everything has come to this. The paradigm is forever changed. In the wake of THE UNMISSABLE CONCLUSION TO THE CATALYST WAR, there can only be one RADIANT BLACK.

Creative Team: “Reckoning”
Writers: Kyle Higgins & Joe Clark
Pencilers: Marcelo Costa & Eduardo Ferigato
Colorists: Raul Angulo & Rod Fernandes
Letterer: Becca Carey
Editor & Designer: Michael Busuttil

Due to the excitement behind these final chapters, we are going to avoid spoiler territory, but I can confidently say that what this team has done is nothing short of a masterclass in storytelling. Since Day 1, Kyle Higgins has endeavored to craft a creator-owned superhero that pushed the boundaries of the comic book medium, and he and the team have absolutely accomplished just that. Every step of the way, Radiant Black has featured innovative elements, from black light issues to QR codes featuring animated short stories. You never know what is coming next with Radiant Black or the Massive-Verse titles from Black Market Narrative, and I think that is what keeps their books at the top of my reading list each month.

With these final issues of “The Catalyst War”, all of the different elements dovetail perfectly as this arc draws to a conclusion. It is a very satisfying ending to a major event, and the creative team has stuck the superhero landing at every level. Everything about these issues feels…well…massive. Higgins and Clark have provided us with a bold take on the comic book event concept. Despite the delays in releases, this event has successfully maintained its energy and consistency across every chapter. The art from Costa and Ferigato is simply stunning, and the colors from Angulo and Fernandes help to add vibrant depth and dimension to these incredible pages. Carey’s approach to lettering continues to be a highlight with each passing issue. Kudos are also needed for Michael Busuttil, who works behind the scenes on editing and graphic design to bring all of the elements together.

There is so much to enjoy in these new issues, and I would highly recommend getting your copies as soon as possible because people are definintely going to be talking about what happens AND what comes next.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
