LOWER DECKS! LOWER DECKS!
We love Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, and the rest of the crew of the Federation Starship USS Cerritos and we simultaneously love and dread that their final season is almost upon us. Clearly the wonderful writers at IDW will continue to keep our love alive well past the expiration of the Lower Decks TV show, and while the highly anticipated Lower Decks ongoing series begins next month, we now have an original graphic novel that is a choose-your-own-adventure, just as we talked about in our recent interview with Ryan North and Heather Antos. But is this really a CYOA? [continue on page 95]
Official Description:
Warp into the action with Star Trek’s first-ever interactive original graphic novel! Mariner just wants to have a normal day, but no matter what side of the bed she wakes up on, the world is ending. Literally. If she has coffee, Borg attack! If she has raktajino, cue the Romulan boarding party! And in each scenario, Mariner and her friends end up dead, sometimes the ship is destroyed-and the day starts all over again. But by exploring the different paths, you, the reader, can discover things that Mariner can’t. There are inconsistencies that don’t make sense-putting aside the fact that Mariner’s choice of drink each morning shouldn’t affect which alien races attack the ship, other facts of her world seem to change too. Something is definitely off. It’s up to you to discover!
Yeah, so, this^ So I think you can read through like an experienced CYOA reader until you die about a dozen times, but then you have run out of legitimate pathways, and so then it’s time to break with convention and see wtf is really going on in this book. What even is the prefix code? What’s going on here, Ryan North?
This book is perfectly drawn by Chris Fenoglio and Ryan North ensures each character’s dialogue is spot on perfect, except when it isn’t, and that’s on purpose. The fact that North turns the CYOA convention on its head and makes that a twist perfectly suited for a Lower Decks story is pure genius.
