Movie Review: The Wild Robot

by G. E. Uke, Reporter

This week, I went out and saw The Wild Robot with my 11 year old daughter. The instant it finished, I went straight home and did some research into the books, and it appears there are three of them (which means there might be a trilogy in the offing after this). This is good, because The Wild Robot is a DELIGHTFUL kids movie that teaches several important life lessons in a heartwarming fashion. It has humor, an interesting plot, and a cast of emotionally interesting characters. I can see why so many great actors came out of the woodwork to participate in it.

In the far distant future, humanity has given in to decadence and are waited on hand and foot by hordes of highly sophisticated robots. Several of these become lost in a storm and wash up on a forested island inhabited solely by animals. One of the robots (Roz, played Lupita Nyong’o) activates and “goes native” by deciphering the language of the native animals, befriending a sly fox Fink (Pedro Pascal), and inadvertently adopting a newborn gosling (Brightbill, aka Kit Connor).

The Wild Robot features the vocal talents of Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy, Kit Connor, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot (2016) serves as the basis for the film, with a story that was written and directed by Chris Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon). The movie was produced by Jeff Hermann (Kung Fu Panda).

The primary action surrounds Roz’s attempts to raise Brightbill to adulthood, despite the fact that he is uncommonly small and would not have survived otherwise. Roz the robot comes to understand a parents’ love, and Fink the fox learns the value of family and sincerity. When the manufacturers of the Roz robot line eventually show up to reclaim their wayward unit, the animals rise up and fight to protect her from being defragmented and losing her memories.

My daughter bawled when Roz said goodbye to Brightbill and let him fly south for the winter, which led to a great father-daughter empathy moment. I won’t go into greater detail than this to avoid spoilers, but it’s very much worth watching. The Wild Robot is the best thing that DreamWorks has created in the past few years.
