Events Interviews TV

Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) joins us for Star Trek stories from Voyager, Picard, and more at ComicsOnline!

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

It’s a great time to be a fan of Star Trek: Voyager.

Jeri Ryan (better known as Seven of Nine, the latest Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise) joins us for a very special “Storytime with ComicsOnline” feature leading up to our onsite coverage at ST-CHI: Trek to Chicago from Creation Entertainment. Jeri spoke with Host Matt Sernaker for a deep dive into the world of Star Trek: Voyager, the build up to her taking the Captain’s Chair on the Enterprise-G for Star Trek: Picard, her acting inspirations, excitement for the event this week, and more.

CO: It’s a special treat to interview the Captain of the Enterprise, so I’m glad that we could start off celebrating Creation Entertainment’s convention this week (ST-CHI) with this interview piece.

JR: Thank you!

CO: We’ve gotten to see Voyager get a lot of love in the last few years between Star Trek: Picard to Star Trek: Prodigy, and even the upcoming Starfleet Academy series and the comics (from IDW Publishing). It’s been a joy to watch you and your castmates get more time in the spotlight. What has been your experience seeing these characters have a resurgence with the fans?

JR: It’s great! Star Trek fans are very unique and very special in that all of these characters from all of these different incarnations of Star Trek over the years have always had a very strong place in their hearts. That has never changed, whether they’re on an active show now or not, which has been pretty unique for this fandom and this franchise as a whole. We’re all incredibly grateful to the fans. But seeing these characters come back in all of these different forms is exciting and its gratifying and it’s fun to continue to see how their stories and their lives developed.

CO You’ve had an incredible journey yourself, from the Delta Quadrant all the way to the harrowing events of Frontier Day. I would love to hear what was going through your mind as an actor when you got to sit in the Captain’s chair and know that it was your chair and your ship for the first time.

JR: (Laughs). It was kind of surreal and strange. I remember at the beginning before we started shooting the final season and we all had our zoom meetings with Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard – Showrunner for Season 3) and he was telling us all what our characters storylines and arcs were going to be for the season. He told me that Seven was going to end up as the Captain of the Enterprise and I was shocked. I mean, that was not anything like the trajectory that I had envisioned or had expected her to take, and it was a really really fun little gift.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
