Book Review: In Any Lifetime

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

If you lost the love of your life, how far would you go if you had the chance to find your way back to them? That’s the million dollar question in the new novel “In Any Lifetime” from writer Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Planet of the Apes, Star Wars), now available wherever books are sold.

Nobel winning scientist Dr. Jonas Cullen has unlocked the secrets of the universe and confirmed the existence of alternate realities. After his discovery is officially recognized, tragedy strikes and his wife Amanda is killed in a horrific car accident. This might have been the end of the road for some people, but Jonas is steady in his resolve to find his way back to Amanda…on a parallel Earth. After Jonas and a team of mercenaries break into the world’s largest particle accelerator, the scientist finds himself bouncing between new realities. Can he find another world where his wife survived? As he explores these strange new worlds, it becomes quite clear that someone (or something) seems to be determined to stop him from his ultimate goal…Can Jonas truly find Amanda in any lifetime?

I’ll admit, I’ve always enjoyed the idea of alternate realities. From television shows like Sliders to the hundreds of What If…? comics in my collection, the idea of parallel universes has always felt intriguing. These days, multiverse concepts are a bit more mainstream (Bring Back Sliders!) but comics really helped to hone this concept with such noted explorations like DC’s Crisis on Infinite Earths and other stories focusing on recognizable characters in surprising new scenarios. Knowing Guggenheim’s history with comics, it’s doesn’t surprise me that he was able to take this concept and put a unique spin on it, but managed to successfully push it to the next level as well. I can’t tell you the last time I finished a book from cover to cover in a single day, but I became more and more invested in Jonas’ quest with each turn of the page.

In Any Lifetime will be appealing for comic book and sci-fi fans alike, as Jonas endures his quest to reunite with his soulmate. Some of the high-level concepts might sound familiar, but this is no ordinary story. This book was a joy to read, and it gave me flashbacks to my enjoyment of works by Michael Crichton, Dean Koontz, and John Scalzi. There’s a reason why In Any Lifetime is being so highly regarded by readers and others in the writing community, and that’s due to Guggenheim’s ability to strategically structure the narrative.

Rating: ★★★★½

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
