Comic Book Review: Green Arrow 16

by Tony Rhea, Reporter

In Brightest Day, in Blackest Night, Green Arrow kicks the butt of…Bright? Look, I know that is GL’s thing, but it’s not easy being green and we know that the Emerald Archer likes to improvise… Ollie seems to have shown up in the nick of time to help his family, but who is Bright and what happens when the battle is over? DC Comics invites all of us to find out in Green Arrow #16!

Official Description:
ABSOLUTE POWER TIE-IN Team Arrow is up against a wall. And it’s not Amanda Waller. It’s her agent of destruction BRIGHT. Who is Bright and why does he hate Green Arrow and his family? Ollie must decide if he should save his family, even if it means they become locked up in Waller’s super prison!

This issue features a story written by Joshua Williamson, art by Amancay Nahuelpan & Sean Izaakse, colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr., and letters by Troy Peteri.

Oliver shows up to back up his family against Bright, and in the process, finds out just who Bright was before he helped Waller. When the dust settles, Oliver leads his family to the relative safety…of a jail cell. Ollie shows Ivo the Amazos, before being interrupted during some mysterious work by some surprise guests. Securing his current place as a traitor, he refuses to help them when they ask, then leaves to find Waller just in time for the events of the upcoming Absolute Power #4!

It’s an intriguing time to be reading Green Arrow. Williamson delivers an Ollie that seems conflicted yet resolute. While Oliver’s true motivations are yet to be revealed, Williamson seems to be the right person at the wheel as this story plays out. One thing is for certain: Green Arrow may not be a villain, but he’s certainly not a hero. However, there are continuing indications that not everything is as it appears, and it’s the breadcrumbs that Williamson is dropping that kept me interested.

There’s no doubt that it’s a good looking issue as well. There is some striking character presentation, perfectly quaffed facial hair, and my personal favorite: expressive characters. Nahuelpan and Izaakse bring a lot of detail to the character faces in this issue, helping to deliver a breadth of emotion on the part of the characters.

Green Arrow #16 is a worthy read, even if Oliver himself isn’t acting very worthy of late.
