Comic Book Review: X-Force #1

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

The next era of X-Men has arrived, and Forge is determined to do things a bit differently than before. New powers, a new mission, and an impressive new team are all ready to go with the debut of X-Force #1!

Following the Fall of Krakoa, Forge has been forced to reevaluate everything. The man who can invent anything he can think of has figured out a way to make his abilities a bit more proactive, and it’s time to put that approach to good use. Our resident inventor has strategically selected a new team consisting of Sage, Captain Britain, Askani, Tank, and a few more surprises (including a team-up with Deadpool) to “fix the world.” Only time will tell if they can accomplish this lofty goal, but if the first issue is any indication, this is going to be a killer book.

Thorne, To, Arciniega, and Caramagna have crafted an impressive opening salvo in the “From the Ashes” era of the X-Books. The determination to learn from the failures of the past and take a different approach to X-Force seems to ring true for both the creative team AND the narrative that they have meticulously designed. I absolutely love the new tactical suit designs as well, as they perfectly complement To’s artistic style and Arciniega’s color pallet. Also, Deadpool gets the best one-liner in the book with an incredible fourth wall break.

This feels like an innovative new direction for the X-Force concept, and I’m excited to say the first issue has me hooked.

Rating: ★★★★½

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
