Comic Book Review: COWL 1964 #1

by Kevin Gaussoin, Editor-in-Chief

Did you miss the first two volumes of C.O.W.L., the 1960s superhero story by Massive-verse creator Kyle Higgins and co-writer Alec Siegel as well as the remarkable Rod Reis? Good news: C.O.W.L. 1964 #1 is on sale this week AND a reprint of Volume 1 is on the way this August!

Official Description:
It’s 1964, and C.O.W.L.-the Chicago Organized Workers League, the world’s first superhero labor union-is going national! But with the old team scattered and powerful forces moving in the shadows, will this union be busted before it gets off the ground? Join the original C.O.W.L. creative team of Kyle Higgins (Radiant Black), Alec Siegel (Hadrian’s Wall), and Rod Reis (New Mutants) for a new miniseries celebrating C.O.W.L.’s 10-year anniversary!

Creative Team:
Writers: Kyle Higgins & Alec Siegel
Art: Rod Reis
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Do you love Watchmen? How about Justice Society? In 2015, Kyle Higgins and Alec Siegel showed us another kind of retro supergroup with C.O.W.L. (The Chicago Organized Workers League) and have now returned to pick up the story two in-universe years later with C.O.W.L. 1964. If Chicago’s superhero union can be successful, then why now take it national? Except this universe’s Batman analogue may have murdered a bad guy in the previous series. That can’t bite them years later, can it?

Do you love New Mutants? Bill Sienkiewicz shook the superhero world with his version of them …oh jeez, 40 years ago… and then somehow he and Phil Noto made an art love child and his name is Rod Reis. About 4 years ago, Reis did some New Mutants issues himself, and they were actually some of the best ones ever. Also back in 2015 (not actually as recent as we’d like to think, but nearly 10 years ago) Reis drew the first series of C.O.W.L. and made a great story greater by adding a perfect retro aesthetic to an already excellent story.

Now here we are, back again with this powerful creative team, story now retconned into Kyle’s Massive-verse and ready to rock our yester-socks off once again with the next volume: C.O.W.L. 1964. Will it?

Spoilers: Yes. Here at ComicsOnline, our yester-socks are nowhere to be found, and it’s clearly all because of Higgins, Siegel, and Reis and their return with C.O.W.L. 1964. Get the trades, start reading this new mini-series. Maybe after it’s over, we’ll post some Amazon links for some new yester-socks. Until then, it’s pointless to try.

Rating: ★★★★★
