Advance Review: Radiant Black #29 and #29.5 (SPOILER-FREE)

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Radiant Black is back for more adventures with the release of Radiant Black #29 AND #29.5 this week. For those of you just joining us, the insane events of the Catalyst War have led to simultaneous stories taking place across different timelines. Both chapters are pivotal to the ongoing conflict as Nathan and Marshall attempt to deal with the alien invasion in their own way. After the harrowing events of the previous issues, one can only wonder what the future is going to look like once the dust settles from “The Final Trial”.

Creative Team:
Writers: Kyle Higgins & Joe Clark
Pencilers: Marcelo Costa & Eduardo Ferigato
Colorists: Rod Fernandes & Raul Angulo
Letterer: Becca Carey

Kyle and the team promised that the Catalyst War event was going to be big, and they definitely have continued to deliver. As readers continue to experience the events of the invasion through the perspectives of Nathan and Marshall, the timelines keep getting bleaker with each passing issue. In Nathan’s timeline, we experienced the sacrifice of his father to save the day, while in Marshall’s timeline, we experienced the loss of Nathan and most of the city of Chicago… How much more can each of these heroes take in this conflict…These new issues start to provide a clearer picture of the outcome, but the ramifications of Catalyst’s arrival on Earth are far from over.

Without going into spoilers, I appreciated how these chapters (and the Catalyst War as a whole) focus a lot on choices. We all know that hindsight is a bitch, and you can only make the best decisions with the information at hand. Everyone makes choices in different ways, and those internal and external biases can really shape the results in so many ways (Wendall knows what I’m talking about). It has been exciting to see how these variations play out on a monthly basis, and although we now have more information to form an opinion, we know that there’s more to this than meets the eye when Kyle is crafting the story (but I’m still Team Nathan).

The art team continues to shine with each new release of the Catalyst War arc. These stories read so organically back-to-back, and the talented creators have developed a visual style that works so perfectly in tandem with these simultaneous adventures. One small ask: I hope that I survive the Chicago alien invasion…Just sayin.

Since the very first issue, Radiant Black has felt like a unique entry in the comic book world. If you are looking for something new, this series is firmly at the top of my recommendation list.

Life is all about choices. Radiant Black is also about choices. Make the right choice and grab your copies of Radiant Black #29 and #29.5 this week because…(REDACTED). “Radiant Black continues its positive disruption of the comic industry.” -Matt Sernaker, ComicsOnline

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
