With Love for Grand!

I created Grand Critter to honor my father. I bought the Unicorn Punch Drink for my daughter, so this cartoon still counts as “based on a true story.”

The OG First Draft

ComicsOnline.com posted the first draft of this cartoon on March 21, 2022. I was “thinking outside the panel” a bit, and probably need to integrate that into my cartoon designs more often!

I originally had Grand as Mandy’s grandfather, which is technically still accurate. Jeb Critter and Old Man Critter are brothers. Jeb is Mandy’s father, and the Old Man is Latuda’s father. “Who’s who” is sometimes confusing for my close friends. Friends and family are the inspiration for creating some of the characters. Then, the critters are grouped together in family or friend units. The grouping happens mostly to fit the joke of the day. I call this an “organic” process, but “chaotic” also fits. So Jeb Critter is Not Jeff’s father. Which means that sentence works on more than one level? Not Jeff is based on a friend, but his father Jeb Critter was one of the ORIGINAL critters. The original critters existed in doodles on my notebooks at school, or on notes to loved ones.

Joe is a husband, #girldad, and Orphan of Apollo. He has drawn critters since riding the bus in 5th grade, and they have appeared on notes to loved ones, graffiti in a Latin classroom (sorry Rev. Dr Clark!), training slides for work, a newsletter in Alaska, and notes to his wife Tracy, who encouraged him to share them with the world. Contains pop culture references, stuff from the news, but mostly bad dad jokes.
