Comic Book Review: Scarlett #2

by Tony Rhea, Reporter

GO JOE! The titular heroine returns Scarlett #2! Scarlett has made her way into the Arashikage base, but things aren’t exactly looking great. Will she be able to make contact with Jinx and discover the necessary info regarding the secret weapon? More importantly, does the Energon Universe continue a trend of breathing new life into characters many of us grew up with?

Official Description: In order to find Jinx, Scarlett goes undercover, deep into the belly of Clan Arashikage, to discover the truth. But the man known as <SPOILER> might have other ideas…

This exciting entry in the Energon Universe is written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Marco Ferrari, colors by Lee Loughridge, and letters by Rus Wooton.

Now inside the Arashikage headquarters, Scarlett has a lot to do and much to prove before she can achieve her goals of contacting Jinx and retrieving the weapon she came for. After a scuffle with some of the Arashikage ninja, Scarlett takes tea with a familiar face and the Hard Master while finding out what she needs to do to prove she has a place among the Arashikage.

Leave it to a writer of Kelly Thompson’s caliber to deliver action and intrigue! As someone who grew up watching G.I. Joe, it’s very exciting for me to see these characters reintroduced, and to be handled so very well. Thompson’s Scarlett is resourceful, intelligent, and a threat. The issue does a great job in slowly building the back story between Scarlett and Jinx, giving the reader more insight into the relationship between these two characters, and builds to an exciting conclusion that left me wanting to read more. As Thompson had previously done with Birds of Prey, I am excited for the next issue of a comic I didn’t know I needed to be reading.

Do you know what else makes for compelling comic book? Fantastic art, and Marco Ferrari delivers! The attention to detail and fantastic fight sequence really pull you in, and make the reader feel almost as if they are watching an action movie rather than reading a comic. Between Thompson’s writing and Ferrari’s art, there is nothing not to love about this issue, and the Energon Universe continues to be one of the most exciting things going on in comics right now.

Scarlett #2 is a no-brainer as far as whether or not it’s worth your hard-earned cash this week. The Energon Universe is still in it’s early days, and Thompson and Ferrari provide ample reason to jump in and start reading if you haven’t already.
