Comic Book Review: Ramgod #1 (Creator Interview now included!)

by Kevin Gaussoin, Editor-in-Chief

For fans of Fast & Furious, Tron, Almost Human, The Running Man, and even Legends of the Hidden Temple comes Massive Publishing’s latest comic series: Ramgod. Tight and sleek with a plot perfect for its inevitable adaptation to a screen version, Ramgod appeals to fans of sci-fi comics and cop shows alike. It might even make stogy old naysayers like me appreciate sports again.

Official Description:
THE FUTURE’S MOST DANGEROUS SPORT JUST GOT A NEW PLAYER.

RAMGOD feels like Point Break meets Fast & Furious, but in a CyberPunk setting that introduces a brand new super high-octane global sport.

NCPD beat cop Clint Bowler has his son Malcolm for the weekend -the one time per month he’s allotted by the courts. While at a local diner, their quality time is interrupted when a nearby crime in progress is reported. Though off duty, Clint chooses to pursue the perpetrator. The chase is captured on video and goes viral.

Meanwhile, RAMGOD the world’s hottest sport, has just announced that all teams must add a fifth player.  The Barracudas, fresh off a loss in the finals, must now figure out who to add to their tight knit group, given their nefarious “side hustle.”

Creative Team:
Writers: Morgan Rosenblum & Owen Rosenblum
Art: Canaan White
Colors: Ren Spiller
Letterer: Ismail Nihad

I highly recommend that you check out our in depth interview with Ramgod’s writing team, brothers Morgan and Owen Rosenblum, to get a ton of details on the comic and how it came to be. Check that out here:

Long story short: Morgan used to be an editor for Heavy Metal magazine and his skills in making sure they had everything just right before going to print is very evident. Not only did they get excellent line and color artists, but they got a fantastic letterer to ensure the world of Ramgod is immersive on every page, ads included.

Collectors, I don’t usually reach out to collectors pointing fingers at a nascent comic story shouting that this Ramgod is bound to be a big hit in other media someday, but I kinda want to buy multiples of these to invest in a way I haven’t felt since 1992 (Hey, we were young then. Everyone else had 11 copies of X-Force #1 too). But seriously, I can’t imagine this not becoming a series of TV or movies or video games or all three. Also these guys appeal to cover appreciators like my wife and me by not only having some great default and homage covers, but variants by David Mack? Come on! We want them all.

What I do normally do focus on is story. Morgan and Owen write like they’ve had industry writing jobs for years. Oh wait, they have. So we have two comic and sci-fi loving sports fan writers, one of which loves world building, the other who loves character building, collaborating on a level that only people who have known each other all their lives can—to bring us Ramgod, a story of an all too human cop who clearly has some character growth coming to him from his first page.

Also Officer Clint Bowler needs a napkin. As a San Diego native, I can appreciate his sentiments about willingness and necessity to go way out of his way to travel to get a proper burrito. I can also appreciate the Ramgod #1 art from Canaan White and Ren Spiller. Way too often do we see a new series start abortively because the art isn’t strong enough to support a good story. Here we thankfully have a combination that is ideal for the setting and the story.

Together, this creative team puts together a fleshed out New City, believable characters, and panel progression that cleanly and clearly tells a story that we can’t wait to continue with Ramgod issue 2.

Rating: ★★★★★
ComicsOnline gives RAMGOD #1 5/5 massive future sports.
