The world’s in chaos! We need somebody to save us! Have no fear, comic book fans, our salvation has arrived in the form of… the Bureau of Sovereignty! This week, DC Comics officially begins their big event: Absolute Power. The question you really have to ask yourself is, do you feel lucky? Will this event excite or disappoint? Read on, you comic book aficionados, as I hope to have some spoiler-free answers to help guide you in my review of Absolute Power #1!
Official Description:
THE TRINITY OF EVIL HAS WON. DC’s epic summer event kicks off with a bang, as the combined might of FAILSAFE and the BRAINIAC QUEEN has at last given Amanda Waller the ability to steal the metahuman abilities of every hero and villain on planet Earth. As chaos erupts in the streets and a massive misinformation campaign sways public opinion to her side, the founder of the Suicide Squad methodically targets each superhero dynasty one at a time, starting with SUPERMAN. But even in this darkest of hours, a resistance is forming…and BATMAN is out for vengeance. It’s a shocking blitzkrieg across the globe that is decades in the making–and will shape the course of the DC Universe for years to come! Brought to you by the superstar talents of MARK WAID and DAN MORA–it all starts here!
This issue of Absolute Power is brought to you by Mark Waid writing, Dan Mora drawing, colors by Alejandro Sánchez, and letters by Ariana Maher.
Superman is mid-monologue when the impossible happens, but we have to flash back a day earlier to see what’s led up to this. As heroes are reeling from what seems like an impossible scenario, the scenario only continues to get worse and worse. Despite their best efforts, the heroes are under attack from civilians, the media, and themselves. Will the heroes figure out what needs to be done before it’s too late? No. Betrayal and misinformation rule the day, and the casualties are already piling up.
DC has been playing with the building blocks of this event for quite a while, and the fruits of their labor have finally come to bear. Waid and Mora deliver a solid and strong start to this event. While not quite as shocking as the opening events of Fall of X, the opening of Absolute Power is no less impactful. What Waid and Mora deliver raises the stakes and delivers exactly what you’re hoping for: an epic event opening. If you have been reading some of the recent comics, some of the events may not be as surprising, but this doesn’t change how cold and calculated some of them are. Visually, this issue is just as striking, and many of the panels hit just as hard as the words being conveyed on the same page.
Absolute Power #1 delivers a solid opening issue, and sets up some fantastic and intriguing events for the follow-on issues. This is an absolute must read!
