Advance Review: Deadpool & Wolverine (SPOILER-FREE)

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

Happy release week for Deadpool & Wolverine everyone! I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a Marvel movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home. The anticipation is high as Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman get to team up for the adventure that we’ve all wanted to see since the shockingly bad Fox installment of X-Men Origins: Wolverine… So after all this time and secrecy, we finally get to see what the team at Marvel Studios has planned for the Merc with a Mouth. Fear not true believers, this review will be spoiler-free, so let’s get to it.

So what can we talk about without the TVA (and Disney) getting mad at us? Well, surely we can talk about the official synopsis.

There isn’t one? Like…not at all…?

Ok well then. Deadpool & Wolverine’s story is…What was the one from the show with the Ponies? Oh yeah.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Friendship is Magic! That is the semi-official, totally legit summary of the movie.

But seriously: Deadpool & Wolverine is an incredibly impressive celebration of all things Marvel Comics that marks the end of one era and the beginning of another. The sheer volume of comic book and cinematic history that is on display here is staggering. From the opening sequence until the final moments, this is a love letter to the Fox films and a whole lot more. You might wonder how it compares to the previous Deadpool films. Did Disney tone it down at all? NOPE. They did quite the opposite and LEANED IN. It is absolutely insane to think that it took us this long to get this Wolverine on screen, but my friends…it was worth the wait. There will be countless screenshots and discussions around various aspects of the film, but the most important piece was that it was just fun and a return to form for Marvel Studios.

The Deadpool & Wolverine official cast listing (without spoilers) includes Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Matthew Macfadyen. The film is directed by Shawn Levy, with a story by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy. This Marvel installment was produced by Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner.

While we can’t talk about the specifics of the story, or the cameos (there are some in the trailer), or the other cameos (there were some in the additional trailer), we can say that the creative team and every single person that contributed to this film will be the reasons that Deadpool & Wolverine will be a phenomenal success. The costumes were PERFECT. The soundtrack rivals Guardians of the Galaxy. The fight sequences were masterful. The opening made me laugh so hard that I was crying. After so many duds with Phase 4 of the MCU, this is a massive win for audiences.

Go see this movie as fast as you can and avoid spoilers. Don’t spoil it for others. Be like Andrew Garfield and lie your ass off until the movie comes out and pretend that you know nothing.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
