Advance Review: My Adventures with Superman: S02E03 – Fullmetal Scientist

by Tony Rhea, Reporter

Look up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s an…overly used opening! Despite that, My Adventures with Superman has returned for season 2! DC and Warner Bros. Animation continue their anime-inspired story with some fantastic character introductions that work towards an expansion of the universe this version of Superman inhabits! ComicsOnline was able to get an advancee look at the third episode of season 2, so brace for minor spoilers ahead!

Clark saves a certain scientist that long-time fans of DC will find interesting, but experiences an oddity with his powers. Following the events of episode 2, Clark and Jimmy have a new houseguest, and none of the three is very excited about it. Jimmy has trouble with the youngest member of his team, leaving Clark alone with Lois’ Dad for a concerning, uncomfortable, but ultimately non-threatening conversation. In the meantime, Lois goes head-to-head with Vicki Vale for a story about Amertek Industries, and learns all about the city’s new metal heroes. Clark, Jimmy, and Flip find another Amertek scientist being targeted (another exciting character), and end up being drawn him to helping him, as the metal heroes I mentioned earlier have a pretty significant drawback. I wonder what Lex is up to…

My Adventures with Superman stars Jack Quaid, Alice Lee and Ishmel Sahid. This episode also features Andromeda Dunker, Zehra Fazal, Joel de la Fuente, Azuri Hardy-Jones, Max Mittelman, and Byron Marc Newsome.

Personally, My Adventures with Superman has been a fun, refreshing take on the character and the mythos. This episode is no exception, and offers quite a bit in the way of world-building, which definitely seems to be a priority this season. Andromeda Dunker is always enjoyable as Vicki Vale, and Max Mittelman shines for the small amount of time we get to see him. Byron Marc Newsome will excite long-time Superman fans as not one, but two characters who are pivotal in the DC Universe, and this episode goes a long way in cementing the return of one of them sooner rather than later. I’m intrigued by the choice the creative team is making with regards to certain abilities of Clark’s that are shown in this episode, and I have certain suspicions about how this powerset will be utilized that will really speak to the anime influences on the show. Only time will tell, but I think it will be worth the ride based off what we’ve seen so far. The only potential complaint to be had is that there is A LOT of new elements crammed into essentially 22 minutes. This is handled well, and at least one of these elements really establishes something we wouldn’t potentially see until MUCH later (if we ever see it at all during the run of this series), it does raise some concerns about pacing and giving a lot of these potential stories time to breathe and develop. That being said, it is exciting to see that the creative team isn’t holding back, and wants to adapt as much as possible from the mythos.

My Adventures with Superman episode 3 – Fullmetal Scientist is a can’t miss episode if you’re a fan of this unique take on Superman, and is full of enjoyable additions that should delight and surprise viewers.
