Comic Book Review: Alan Scott: The Green Lantern #6

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor,

It all comes down to this! Alan Scott and the Justice Society of America face off against “The Crimson Host”, a Soviet team of Crimson Flame powered warriors. Can our heroes save the day and stop this band of villains? And just how does The Red Lantern fit into the final battle? From Writer Tim Sheridan, Artist Cian Tormey, Inker Jordi Tarragona, Colorist Matt Herms, and Letterer Lucas Gattoni comes the epic finale of Alan Scott: The Green Lantern!

Official Synopsis:
THE FINAL BATTLE WITH THE RED LANTERN! Alan Scott’s final battle with the Red Lantern rages to a fever pitch! With Alan overcome with anger at his mortal enemy, will he cross a line he’s never thought he would? The explosive conclusion of one of the Green Lantern’s earliest adventures is here, and the fallout will affect Alan Scott forever!

The last chapter of Alan Scott’s story provided some interesting revelations about his power and place in the universe. The interconnected history of the Emerald and Crimson Flames became much clearer (along with a great new connection to the Green Lantern Corps), and the timing couldn’t have been better as Alan found himself facing down a full team of Soviet warriors. Alan’s powers will need to be pushed to their limits as he works with the JSA to stop this new menace before all is lost. With the shocking reveal about Vlad’s past and the damage done by his country, will the “Rage of the Red Lantern” be more than anyone can handle? No spoilers on this one (you’ll have to pick up the book this week to find the answers) but I think you will find that they “stuck the landing” on this finale.

If you’ve checked out our past reviews, then you will know that it is no secret that I am a big Green Lantern fan. I had very high expectations for this series, and I feel like the creative team consistently outdid themselves at every turn. The final chapter of this mini-series put a very satisfying bow on the story, ensuring a sense of completion while setting the stage for Alan to take the spotlight again down the road. With the consistent outpouring of love and interest from the fans, I would hope that DC would be actively engaging this talented group of creators for another arc in the near future.

It’s not often that our team at ComicsOnline calls a book “perfect”, but Alan Scott: The Green Lantern has earned that designation with this masterclass in storytelling. I truly appreciated how Alan Scott: The Green Lantern took an additive approach to the character’s history, and I have a feeling that this will be a fan-favorite chapter in the Green Lantern saga for many years to come. This book couldn’t have been any better if they tried.

Rating: ★★★★★

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
