Comic Book Review: Ultimate Spider-Man #4

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Guess who’s coming to dinner? With their world changing at a crazy pace, Peter and MJ hit the town for a double date with Harry Osborn and his wife…Gwen Stacy?! Get ready for a very unique story with Ultimate Spider-Man #4 from Marvel Comics.

Official Synopsis:
WHO IS THE GREEN GOBLIN? Peter Parker’s secret life starts fraying the edges of his personal life! J. Jonah Jameson and Ben Parker’s pursuit of truth — or, at least, the news — stirs unrest with the world at large… And now that Spider-Man may not have to operate alone, the real work of rebuilding this corrupt world can begin!

Creative Team:
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Guest Artist: David Messina
Colorist: Matthew Wilson
Letterer: VC’s Cory Petit

Peter Parker and Harry Osborn have traditionally been friends throughout the various incarnations of the Marvel Universe, but in this new Ultimate timeline, things played out in a very different way. With their history wiped away thanks to The Maker’s machinations, readers are now just getting to see Peter and Harry just now assuming the roles of Spider-Man and the Green Goblin as adults. After the surprising events of last issue and their secret identities revealed, the boys decide the best course of action is to…go on a double date? Yup. Peter, MJ, Harry, and Gwen head out for a fancy “get to know you dinner” where we get to learn more about this new ultimate world and see how things actually worked out in a world without superheroes. The dinner takes a few interesting turns, and Gwen shares that she is interested in investing in Ben and Jonah’s new business: The Paper! With their lives becoming more intertwined, it will be very interesting to see what happens next for these two power couples.

The most shocking twist of the issue came from Harry Osborn, as he is the first in this new universe to hit Peter with the “with great power comes great responsibility” statement (sorry Uncle Ben). The line obviously resonates with Peter (as it should), but how will it impact his choices when it comes from someone outside of the Parker family? Only time will tell, but Hickman is definitely full of surprises.

Ultimate Spider-Man #4 mixed things up a bit from an art perspective and featured Guest Artist David Messina (Star Trek: Countdown). Messina’s style really complemented the down to Earth tone of the story, and I look forward to seeing more from him in future issues.

Rating: ★★★★½

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
