Comic Book Review: Void Rivals #5

by Tony Rhea, Reporter

The expansion and exploration of the Energon Universe continues in the pages of Void Rivals #5!

Official Description:
EXPLORE THE ENERGON UNIVERSE! When Darak and Solila’s return to the Sacred Ring doesn’t go as planned, a new danger enters their lives!

Creative Team:
Written by Robert Kirkman
Art by Lorenzo De Felici
Colors by Patricio Delpeche
Letters by Rus Wooton.

Darak and Solila have been captured. Darak faces torture for information he can provide. Solila awaits her execution, only to discover that her fate may be something she hadn’t expected. Surprises abound for them both in this issue, with some faces that may be familiar to long time Transformers fans.

If you had told me that a comic set in the Transformers universe could be as interesting without the larger presence of established Transformers, I would have told you that you were nuts. Robert Kirkman, however, has managed to create a story that could exist in a universe all it’s own, but both enhances and is enhanced by the Transformers canon. Darak and Solila are both interesting characters, and the Handroid provides some great moments. As we approach the finale of this current Void Rivals arc, I’m really appreciating the time and care that Kirkman is taking with this narrative.

The original character designs for Void Rivals are great, as are the presentations for established-lore characters. As an example, Mistress Vill and her companions are terrifying and cool, and bear enough similarity to Solila that it’s easy to see the connection, while neither would look out of place if an Autobot or Decepticon showed up. As much as I am a fan of the Transformers themselves, these great designs for original characters are a large part of what keeps me coming back to this series.

Void Rivals #5 is easily taking a “must-buy” spot for this week. With Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici at the helm, this series should continue to absolutely rock.
