Official Description:
The covert first mission of the re-formed Birds of Prey has established their beachhead…in Themyscira! What could be so important to Black Canary that she’d risk the wrath of the greatest warriors on Earth?!
Creative Team:
Written by Kelly Thompson
Art by Leonardo Romero
Colors by Jordie Bellaire
Lettering by Clayton Cowles.
The team make their way to Themyscira with the help of King Shark. Once there, the team splits up to cover more ground. Zealot holds true to her promise, finding a work around to having to kill the Amazons. Stealthing around the island is critical to the plan, but isn’t as simple as the Birds hope, and their plan runs into several setbacks. Can they save Sin before the Amazons call for help in the form of Wonder Woman, and can a friend help keep her distracted long enough to delay her presence?
Kelly Thompson has put together a surprising team with her new Birds of Prey series. The new Birds of Prey are proving to work very well together and are incredibly entertaining to read. This issue doesn’t disappoint in this regard, and Thompson is adept at utilizing the unique voices of these characters to craft a compelling story. It’s also worth noting that this series isn’t afraid to lean into the humor, which provides a nice break from some of the moodier DC titles.
It’s been mentioned before, but the blend of classic style with more modern character designs is charming and makes for some great panels. Romero’s work in this issue continues this love letter to classic comics. There is some fantastic use of shadow and silhouette, great character close-ups, and some excellent use of expression with each of the characters. The panels featuring Zealot on the beach are a good example of this.
Birds of Prey #3 feels like a classic adventure comic that is more than worthy of your hard-earned dollars, and this series has consistently been on point, so you would be well served in buying it month-to-month.
