Comic Book Review: All-New Firefly: The Gospel According to Jayne – Vol. 3 (HC)

by Christal Kennedy, Reporter

Official Description:
Jayne drifts in space, isolated except for the company of painful memories, starship debris, and guilt..
Meanwhile, a distress call from Requiem greets the crew, hinting at where the relics really came from…
Where did the monks find them, and what secret Alliance connection do they have? Captain Kaylee is determined to know. Can the crew of the Serenity retake Requiem and defeat the Tax Collector once and for all? What’s more, Jayne will go to any length to save his son but it won’t be enough, as a beloved member of the spaceship Serenity will make the ultimate sacrifice. All-New Firefly comes to a stunning conclusion by writer David Booher (Canto, Joe Hill’s Rain) and artist Simona Di Gianfelice!

Jayne is racked with guilt thinking he has lost Owen forever, but Mal isn’t so sure. Mal convinces his old friend that there might be hope that his son is still alive…all he has to do is help rescue Simon from the monastery. The monks have keeping secrets from the crew and the truth behind what they are hiding might just be the key to help Jayne save his son. Coming in guns blazing, Jayne will stop at nothing until he knows if Owen is still alive.

Daring rescues, gun fights, awkward family moments culminate at a bittersweet ending that had me shedding tears. Booher’s finale of this chapter of the Serenity crews’ escapades leaves fans choking back tears, the last time the crew gutted me like this was in Serenity when we lose Wash. Jayne’s story comes full circle in this epic ending. Booher’s deep dive into Jayne’s character development over this series has been incredible to watch. With writing and visuals like these, fans of the franchise will once again be screaming, “Why was Firefly cancelled?!”.  After I grieve with the crew of Serenity, I will eagerly wait for what comes next for our band of misfits.

Rating: ★★★★½
