Ted Kord may have survived his attack, but he is in rough shape. As Jaime struggles with his guilt, Xiomara and Roma contend with the Blood Scarab when he attacks Oo’li and the Horizon. Jaime arrives in time to save his friends, but not before some damage has been done. We also learn who Brenda’s new employer is, and the stake she has in the game.

Trujillo has done a great job keeping the tension up in these last two issues, and the tension continues to build. The Blood Scarab has quickly been established as a credible threat, and his threat level only continues to rise, and Trujillo allows this new enemy to become more interesting and more threatening by showcasing a new nasty ability that will truly make him a villian to be reckoned with.

The art and color by Gutierréz and Quintana continue to impress, and are the true stars of the issue. Each panel is vibrant and gorgeous to look at, and truly elevates the story. Both of these artists have a great command over these characters, with the best looking being the Blood Scarab, who has some of the best panels in the issue. The use of color to create impressive lighting effects can also not be understated, and is used to great effect throughout the issue.

Blue Beetle #2 is a fun and fantastic read, and as the second issue in what is becoming one of the more interesting DC books, it’s indicative of a coming hot streak for Trujillo and team as they take us on a raucous ride with ever-rising stakes.
