Blu-ray Review: Rick and Morty: The Complete Seasons 1-6

by Tony Rhea, Reporter

It’s time to get schwifty everyone! The Blu-Ray release of Rick and Morty: The Complete Seasons 1-6 is upon us! As we all prepare for the arrival of season 7, what better way to prepare then re(re-re-re)-watching the first six seasons of this fantastic series that isn’t afraid to take shots at itself and others? If you are unfamiliar with the series (how?), it’s all about the Rickest of Ricks and his grandson Morty going on crazy adventures involving portals, science, and antics. Rick’s daughter Beth, her husband Jerry, and daughter Summer are along for the ride, and more involved as the seasons progress. Few shows find the staying power that this show has, and that’s impressive when you take the risks with your narrative that this show has. While many of the episodes can be enjoyed on their own, the backstory that develops across these six seasons is equal parts tragic and hilarious, and the passion that the team behind it has for this show really shines through.

Set Highlights:

“Meeseeks and Destroy” – Who has time to help their family with petty problems when there is adventuring to do. Rick provides his family with the helpful Mr. Meeseeks while he and Morty go on an adventure, and we all learn what happens when you push a Meeseeks to the edge!

“Rick Potion #9” – Morty wants to finally get the attention of his crush, but one minor mistake can have world-changing implications (and lead to series long jokes and changes).

“Mortynight Run” – Rick and Morty drop Jerry off at a Jerry daycare facility. Morty discovers that not all gas is good gas (especially the musically-inclined variety).

“Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate” – Jerry is asked to make a big sacrifice for the greater good, and in the meantime, Rick can enjoy some interdimensional cable!

“The Rickshank Rickdemption” – While Morty and Summer argue about Rick, Rick works towards escaping the clutches of the Galactic Federation (insert tragic back story here).

“Pickle Rick” – It’s Rick! He’s a pickle! Who needs family therapy, anyway?

“One Crew over the Crewcoo’s Morty” – Rick and Morty put together a crew to perfom a heist, but when met with a challenger, who can out-heist whom?

“Never Ricking Morty” – Rich and Morty ride a train through space that is also a narrative device. Who is driving the train, what do they intend, and what do the abs of Jesus have to do with it?

“A Rickconvenient Mort” – Rick and Morty do a spectacular riff on Captain Planet that will both remind you of your childhood, and taint it forever at the same time.

“Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort” – Rick finally addresses the fallout from the season 2 finale, making every effort to save Birdperson and deal with his past at the same time.

“Bethic Twinstinct” – The Smith’s celebrate Thanksgiving while Beth struggles to answer the age old question of romancing your clone and what variety of pleasure it is.

“A Rick in King Mortur’s Mort” – Morty learns the hard way that not every gift offered should be a gift taken, and this gift could ruin the solar system!

Special Features:

This wonderful collection brings together all of the special features from the previously released seasons! It would have been great to see them put something special together for this collective season release, but there is a ton of commentaries, deleted scenes, animatics, etc.

Overall:

If you’ve been holding out on buying Rick and Morty on Blu-Ray/DVD due to it being available on streaming, this is honestly a great time to buy. The show streams on Max right now, but with the general shakiness of MAX’s lineup, you can never be 100% certain that it will stay there (however it is likely since the show continues to be such a hit). The plethora of bonus features on offer alone make it worth your while! I’m typically pretty thrifty when it comes to buying sets of any show, but this one is an easy decision, and I wouldn’t hesitate on this purchase.
