Comic Book Review: Buffy The Last Vampire Slayer #2

by Christal Kennedy, Reporter

Official Description
Being new to slaying doesn’t mean that Thess likes being infantilized, especially by an over-protective demon named Anya, who’s controlling at every turn.

But concerning Cora Devonshire-Thess’s current crush-is there any validity to Anya’s suspicion? As she and Cora get closer, Thessaly’s flippancy and resentment might just get the best of her though, when she takes on a job from the Watcher’s Council, and is pursued by some admittedly sexy stalkers…

I am not sure who has it harder, Anya or Spike? Spike is just trying to enjoy a vacation with the love of his life and Anya just wants to do a good job taking care of Thess and being the fill in Watcher. Buffy seems to be having a hard time being the watcher rather than the slayer and Thess wants her independence and to prove herself. How many vamps does a girl need to stake to get a date night?

Anya seems to be taking her Watcher duties very seriously…maybe a little too seriously, there is a fine line between watching and stalking. If Anya isn’t careful, she may just push Thess a little too far. On top of Anya’s hovering, she has to deal with Cora’s brother and his posse as well as a mysterious demon running around town.

The second installment of Gilly’s story arc has us wondering if Buffy can ever let go of being the Slayer and finally relax and enjoy a normal life. Gilly’s writing brings out the realism buried in this supernatural world. I am sure people can relate to grieving a part of themselves that no longer fits who they are now, feeling lost and looking for our purpose. Whether you’re a teenager or having a midlife crisis, we all struggle to figure out our place in the world. Roig’s art has a great attention for detail, highlighting the complexity of emotions these characters are dealing with. I am anxious to see how the events from this issue unravel the fates of our heroines.
