Comic Review: The Vampire Slayer Vol 3

by Christal Kennedy, Reporter

Official Description:
Willow’s takeover as the Slayer concludes here! While Xander gets ready for a monstrous confrontation, he finds a new one in his relationship as well… a fight that could mean the end in more ways than one. But Willow and Faith are one step ahead of Xander. Needing supernatural aid, will Willow push herself to a place she may not be able to return from? Despite Giles’ efforts, they may have to live with an irreversible spell. And as Buffy recuperates from the previous battle that’s left her worse for wear, she’ll team up with someone just as reluctant to do so. Can Buffy remember who she was and save Willow from herself… as well as Sunnydale from total destruction? Writer Sarah Gailey (Eat the Rich, Magic For Liars) and artist Hannah Templer (Flung Out of Space) conclude the first year of the WILLOWVERSE storyline! Collects The Vampire Slayer #9-12.

Buffy is powerless. After recent events, she is feeling lonely and desolate due to the isolation from her friends.  Her purpose has been taken from her and she no longer feels a reason to get out of bed in the morning.  Willow’s reckless choice to use dark magic threatens not only her life but the fate of all those she cares about. Faith comes clean to Buffy about the loss of her Slayer powers, and Giles will need to deal with the fallout between him & Buffy. Now, the Scooby Gang has to band together to save Willow from herself before Sunnydale (and life as they know it) comes to an end.

Sarah Gailey’s delve into the Willowverse has given us a glimpse into another dimension of Buffy that includes not only our core Scooby Gang but fan favorites Spike, Faith and Tara. Her take on Xander gives us a whole new side to this character to love. Buffy and Giles have always had a father daughter dynamic to their bond and in this story arc, Giles maybe thinks more like a father than a watcher.  In his effort to take away Buffy’s pain from everything she has endured as the slayer, he and Willow inadvertently take away her slayer powers and with them, her sense of purpose.

Hannah Templer’s artwork expertly brings Sarah’s words to life. I have to say as someone who loved the “Dark Willow” storyline in the TV show, the panels of Willow feeding off the dark magic are by far my favorite in this volume. Also, not sure how you make a demon crab god look adorable and cuddly but Templer, Pinto & Giardina found a way…Xander wearing the little dude in the snuggly is too cute for words.  Let’s see how this powerhouse team wraps up the Willowverse.
