It’s always hard to say goodbye. After 20 years, the time has come to bid a fond farewell to the Team Venture… The Venture Bros.: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart serves as the series finale, closing the book on The Venture Bros. (hopefully not forever), and closing out a chapter for the rest of us.
Picking up shortly after the series left off, OSI and the remaining members of Team Venture are trying to find Hank, and having no luck. Hank, meanwhile, is trying to find himself on the road back to his former home. Monarch and Henchman 21 grow frustrated with their lower status in the guild, while Dr. Mrs. The Monarch tries to finally solve the mystery of the Monarch’s lineage. The arrival of Arch throws a wrench into all of it, while Dr. Venture may have a helper-sized problem all his own.
The Venture Bros.: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart brings back all of your favorite voice actors from the series, and adds a few new ones. James Urbaniak (The Venture Bros), Patrick Warburton (Family Guy), Michael Sinterniklaas (Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir), Doc Hammer (The Venture Bros.), Chris McCulloch A.K.A Jackson Publick (The Venture Bros.), Nina Arianda (Midnight in Paris), Clancy Brown (Spongebob Squarepants), John Hodgman (Dicktown), Hal Lublin (The Venture Bros.), Jane Lynch (Wreck-it Ralph), Charles Parnell (Top Gun: Maverick), Jay Pharaoh (Saturday Night Live), Steven Rattazzi (The Venture Bros.), JK Simmons (Invincible), Dana Snyder (Aqua Teen Hunger Force). The voice talents we are familiar with from the show continue the amazing work fans of the series are already familiar with. Chris McCullough and Doc Hammer continue their trend of taking on so many of the characters and doing an amazing job with each of them. Nina Arianda does a fantastic job as Mantilla, and I would love to see her and/or Mantilla show back up if we do get future movies.
The art and animation should be very familiar to fans of the show. There aren’t any drastic changes, beyond a bit more polish. The movie looks great, and as we have seen throughout the series, a lot of attention is paid to making sure that the backgrounds are very detailed.
Special features included with the Blu-ray release are audio commentary with Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer, fan questions answered by Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer in commentary, and Hodgman and friends featurette.
I think the biggest highlight of the movie is that we finally get some of the big reveals teased throughout the series involving the Monarch, as well as Hank and Dean. These reveals do kind of take a backseat to the rest of the story, but I think once you see them, you’ll understand why. I do wish that Brock had a bit more to do with the story, as he was always a large part of the series. Honestly, the amount of time he does spend on screen works, though, as the characters that are most utilized fit the story better than if they shoe-horned Brock in.
The Venture Bros.: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart is a fun and hilarious send off to these wonderful characters and the world that Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer have created. I do hope that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of these characters, but if it is, I would be satisfied with how it ended (and you can’t always say that).
