Cooking Review: Supernatural: Join The Hunt – The Official Cocktail Book & Supernatural: The Official Cookbook

by Emma Smith, Assistant Editor

Are you missing Sam, Dean, Castiel, and the rest of the Supernatural gang? Do you dream of hosting a themed party? Are you really obsessed with pie? Insight Editions is releasing Supernatural: Join The Hunt – The Official Cocktail Book, a new cocktail book full of delicious Supernatural cocktails that compliments their previous release – Supernatural: The Official Cookbook. Use the two to throw a smashing throwback party or cook your fill of down home diner food.

The Recipes

This book contains 70 recipes – mostly cocktails with a few good recipes to soak up the liquor at the end. The mix of cocktails is impressive, featuring everything from a comforting cup of hot buttered rum to the sophisticated stylings of a London Martini. There is truly something for everyone, making the recipes great for gatherings, though everyone may need to bring something to have all the various ingredients. There are certainly cocktails in here I wasn’t familiar with, some modern and some even dating back to the Great Depression, all with a Supernatural twist.

The related cookbook gathers food from the various stops along the Winchesters’ travels, which means there is quite a lot of diner food featured. The largest section is the dessert one, featuring six different pies (hopefully at least one of which Dean gets to eat a full slice of). The recipes are artery clogging deliciousness, from the Elvis Burger to the Philly Cheesecake Sandwiches to the Baby Back Ribs you could almost swear you can smell. It can be a challenge to bring to life drinks and food that has only ever needed to look good on screen but James Asmus and Adam Carbonell (cocktails) and Julie Tremaine (cooking) are up to the task. Impressively, the books coordinate very well despite have different authors.

The Pictures

The cocktails jump off the page with vivid colors and mysterious lighting, very in keeping with a show full of monsters. They certainly do look good enough to convince you to try some of the more unusual cocktails. I do wish there were more of them, as cocktails can be a bit challenging for novices and the visual aid is helpful. In the cookbook, the pictures evoke a friendly home-cooking vibe, with a skull mixed in here and there. Most of the recipes in the book include full page photographs of the dishes.

The Supernatural Tie-In

Each book features many stills from the show, centering the recipes within the story. They also include explanations of what people or plot points inspired the various recipes. Especially with the cocktails, it is nice to see the celebrations of the show’s characters, including Charlie, Delphine, Bobby, Garth, and even Death. The authors did an excellent job of using elements of the show as jumping off points for the food and drinks.

Our Evaluation

These books are great for amateur mixologist and big fans of Supernatural. What’s not to love about celebrating the Winchester Boys with a good whiskey and a juicy burger. While likely not a daily go to, there is certainly plenty to love in both offerings.
