Under the leadership of talented showrunner/director/writer Terry Matalas, the crew of the Enterprise-D faced their darkest hour and were forced to come together to save the universe one last time. This team crafted the perfect opportunity to give these legends the closure that they should have received nearly 20 years earlier. As we approach the 2023 Emmys, we wanted to recognize some of the reasons why Star Trek: Picard is deserving of your vote.
This season of Star Trek: Picard achieved a status that few shows are able to accomplish. This isn’t just about must-see TV, but a story that is elevated to a cultural moment where viewers new and old are excited to discuss, speculate, and celebrate their heroes. We’ve seen reboot after reboot over the last decade that failed to value why their respective characters and stories were so beloved. This particular instance shows how well a revival story can be, even if it’s long overdue.
The final season is filled with impressive acting from each of the talented members of the cast. Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, Brent Spiner, and LeVar Burton took advantage of every second of screen time. The crew of the Enterprise-D gave this finale run their all to ensure that viewers received the best possible conclusion for their iconic characters. Everyone got a chance to shine, with characterization and career-defining performances that will surely be regarded as the best that Trek has ever featured.
The season also features standout performances from Jeri “Give This Captain a Show Now” Ryan, Michelle Hurd, Ed Speleers, Todd Stashwick, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, and Mica Burton. The next next generation truly shines bright with these characters (except for Todd…because spoiler…he’s dead), and I think we would all pay good money to see their respective stories continue after this season with the newly launched Enterprise-G.
Visually speaking, Season 3 is gorgeous. The initial flight sequence of the Enterprise-D was the perfect example of the hero shot, and the Borg get their equivalent moment in the opening moments of the finale. The spectacular return of the Enterprise-D, along with the final battle against the Borg, is something that we could have only dreamed of previously.
The recreation of the Enterprise bridge was handled in painstaking detail, with expert craftsmanship and an approach that would rival most museum-level recreations. Production design teams so rarely get recognized, and thanks to new images courtesy of Production Designer Dave Blass, we have the opportunity to celebrate the names and roles that these incredible people played in bringing this epic to life:
Overall
This creative team executed the perfect story that honored these iconic characters, as well as the franchise in its entirety. Over a ten-week span, Terry Matalas and his crew boldly took audiences on a journey that was on par with previous pop culture events like LOST Season 1, Heroes Season 1, or Game of Thrones (everything before the final season). An Emmy win for Star Trek would only help to elevate the chances of a new Paramount+ series that featured the continuing adventures of the Enterprise. The final season of Star Trek: Picard wasn’t just a regular occurrence for television, but a celebration and culmination of 35+ years of storytelling.
For all of these reasons (and more), we humbly ask that you vote for this incredible production for the 2023 Emmy season. Star Trek: Picard – Season 3 was a big win for audiences, and it is more than deserving of formal recognition on the award stage. #FYC
