Comic Book Review: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – The Dog of War #3

This series started a couple of short months ago and we’re already on Issue #3? Time to update you on Issue #2 real quick…

Official Synopsis of #2:
As Latinum the corgi begins winning over the hearts of the DS9 crew, Quark finds his own greed-filled heart touched by the large-lobed creature. But only a fool passes up a business opportunity! Meanwhile, Sisko tests the mysterious Borg component brought aboard the station in hopes of finding a tactical advantage in the war against the Dominion.

Official Synopsis of #3:
The Deep Space 9 crew throw a farewell party worth a corgi’s weight in latinum! But just as they prepare to send off Latty, they are met with the screaming siren sounds of a security breach, and not only is the prized corgi nowhere to be found…the Borg headset is missing as well. Now the crew must put their heads together to retrieve their pup and keep the tech out of enemy hands!

Quark’s deal with his mysterious buyer is falling apart and when Quark reveals that the Federation has their hands on the Borg headset, someone breaks into DS9 and heads may roll! Will Quark grow enough conscience to stop Latinum from being stuffed by poachers? Can Sisko use the Borg tech to turn the tide of the Dominion War? Can we get a single of Latinum playing a song with Vic?

This issue is written by Mike Chen (Star Wars Brotherhood) and art by Angel Hernández (Star Trek – Green Lantern: The Spectrum War) with colors by Nick Filardi (Powers, Deadpool) and lettering by Neil Uyetake (Star Trek: Picard – Stargazer). Cover A is by interior artists Hernández and Filardi, Cover B features Latty accompanying Vic Fontaine on piano and is drawn by Adrián Bonilla, Cover C ifeatures Dax and Worf and two dogs by Andy Price, and the Retailer Incentive covers feature Quark and Odo and a bunch of dogs.

Latinum’s final fate is still a mystery, but Mike Chen’s writing is still killing it. Dog lovers and Deep Space Nine enthusiasts will continue to love this series. It’s so good you may want to go back and watch DS9 season 6 all over again just like we did. The characterization and tone in story, dialogue, and visual representation continues to be spot on with the original series. Obviously this is important for a show we’ve loved for 25 years, right?
