Review: MMPR #100 (Spoiler Free)

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

The Charge to 100 reaches its end as MMPR #100 has finally arrived! All of the epic adventures of our favorite teenagers with attitude have helped to prepare them for the battle ahead. Now that the Death Ranger has taken control of the Omega Rangers, can the Mighty Morphin team find a way to save their friends and restore balance to the universe?

Since joining the Boom! team on Go Go Power Rangers, readers would quickly learn that Ryan Parrott (Rogue Sun) has a unique understanding of the Ranger team. His character-driven stories have consistently been full of emotion and depth, providing fans with a greater insight into heroes that have been around for nearly 30 years. From the secret origins of Zordon, Lord Zedd, and The Omega Rangers, to the recent introduction of the Death Ranger, Ryan’s impact on this franchise has been nothing but… morphinominal to say the least. Additionally, he has assembled quite an impressive creative team to help tell his final installment in the Power Rangers universe. This issue features series artists Marco Renna and Moisés Hidalgo, with colorists Tamra Bonvillain and Matt Herms. Additionally, Eleonora Carlini, Francesco Mortarino, Daniele Di Nicuolo, Dan Mora, Hendry Presetya, and Miguel Mercado return to contribute to this milestone issue, adding their own flare and impact to the legacy that the Boom! Studios team has created throughout the impressive run.

Without going into spoilers, MMPR #100 does much to further the lore and impact of the multi-colored heroes in spandex. Over the last several issues, fans have been introduced to an earlier version of the characters from the In Space era, filling in the gaps on what happened prior to Andros’ adventures on screen. The history of the Death Ranger was revealed, and the Omega Rangers have fallen victim to their evil goals. Sacrifices must be made and legacy characters will absolutely be impacted as a result. Ryan’s ability to craft impactful set pieces and character moments is apparent throughout the issue, as there are several moments to make you cheer. Alternatively, if you are not an emotional wreck by the end of the issue, I would be truly shocked.

Overall

MMPR #100 is the perfect ending for Ryan’s run. He, along with his team, absolutely stuck the superhero landing with this story. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Omega Rangers, & In Space Rangers come together in a team-up installment that will blow you away. This is a must-read issue for fans and is a story that will have an impact for years to come.

What comes next?

Ryan Parrott’s creator-owned series, Rogue Sun, continues with a Choose Your Own Adventure-inspired story hitting stores this week. If you aren’t caught up on that series, the first TPB has just been released, containing issues 1-6. Ryan will also return for MMPR/TMNT II, and we will have more news on that in the coming months. Special thanks to Ryan for the interviews and discussions throughout his epic run on the series.

Melissa Flores (The Dead Lucky) assumes creative control of the Power Rangers comics with issue #101. As someone with a long history and deep understanding of the Power Rangers franchise, we know that Melissa is the perfect person to complete the Power Transfer and take the lead on the main series.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
