Get ready, because Clark Kent and Lois Lane are leaving Metropolis behind for new adventures in…Smallville? Wait, didn’t that series run for ten seasons? When you put it that way, it would be easy to assume that the previous show was getting rebooted, but in reality, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that Superman & Lois: The Complete First Season (now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital)provides a fresh new take on Superman mythology and a visually stunning approach to our hero on the small screen.

If you are wondering about the sudden appearance of Jonathan and Jordan Kent, don’t worry, we can catch you up. During the massive Arrowverse crossover called “Crisis on Infinite Earths”, Superman and Lois had their world rocked with the arrival of his newborn son, Jonathan Kent. The arrival of this new family member was sure to create new challenges for our favorite super-couple, but they first had to survive the end of reality as a whole when the Anti-Monitor attacked. When the dust of Crisis settled and the Arrowverse shows re-emerged as one cohesive world on Earth-Prime, Clark and Lois suddenly had not one, but TWO teenage sons…DUN DUN DUN.

The first season of Superman & Lois picks up from the crossover’s dramatic teaser, providing viewers with their first glimpse at the new Super-family. Clark is struggling to balance his life as Superman and his responsibilities as a parent. Adding to complications, Martha Kent has suddenly passed away and Morgan Edge has purchased the Daily Planet. With Clark being laid-off and Lois’ refusal to work for Edge, the couple finds themselves at a crossroads. After careful consideration, they decide the time is right to relocate their family from Metropolis to Smallville and put themselves in a better position to rebuild their family dynamic.

Musical cut. Insert Remy Zero’s “Save Me” here.

Moving into the family home, The Kents are reintroduced to Lana Lang-Kushing and her family. including her husband Kyle and daughter Sarah. Jonathan and Jordan strike up a friendship with Sarah, and you can bet that the kids will find themselves in all kinds of trouble. Without skipping a beat, the kids narrowly avoid injury and it seems like someone might be developing superpowers! How will this impact the family? Are Lois and Clark ready for teenage superheroes? Oh, and then Morgan Edge and his company arrive in town with ominous goals. Do they truly want to help Smallville to return to its former glory? What secrets are they hiding? How will Lois conduct a thorough investigation if she doesn’t have a newspaper to write for? This might sound like a lot to deal with, but we haven’t even touched on the mysterious stranger with connections to Superman who narrowly escaped from the destruction of his world during Crisis, but that would give away too many plot twists and surprises that will entertain you through the freshmen season.

Superman & Loisfeatures returning Arrowverse players Tyler Hoechlin (Supergirl) and Elizabeth Tulloch (Supergirl) as the title characters, with Jordan Elsass (Little Fires Everywhere) as Jonathan Kent, Alex Garfin (New Amsterdam) as Jordan Kent, Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage) as Lana Lang-Kushing, Erik Valdez (Graceland) as Kyle Kushiing, Inde Navarrette (13 Reasons Why) as Sarah Kushing, Adam Rayner (Tyrant) as Morgan Edge, Dylan Walsh (Blue Bloods) as Sam Lane, and Wolé Parks (All American) as “The Stranger”. Hoechlin and Tulloch continue to impress with their iterations of Clark and Lois, and we really couldn’t be more fortunate to have these two leading the way for this new series. While it was great to have them play with the various Arrowverse characters in their previous appearances, this series has allowed them to take the characters in unexplored directions. The aging-up of Jonathan and Jordan was quite the surprise, and Elsass and Garfin prove to be worthy additions to the Superman story. Thankfully, the duo was perfectly cast as the children of Clark and Lois. While I was a bit hesitant at first, their acting continues to get better with each passing episode. Without providing spoilers, Wolé Parks was my favorite addition to the show. No one could have predicted the role that he would eventually play, and as layer after layer of his character was revealed, fans were gifted with a very big surprise. Lastly, Adam Rayner’s Morgan Edge was a calculating threat for the family to face throughout the season, and the creative team found a rather unique way to have Superman take on this adversary.

If you have previously enjoyed the Arrowverse family of shows, you might have noticed a big difference in production quality for Superman & Lois. This series absolutely feels like we are looking at a more cinematic approach on the small screen, providing stunning visuals, special effects, and aesthetics that set the show apart from its CW predecessors. Hopefully, this new visual approach will be the gold standard moving forward for additional series, but only time will tell.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
