SDCC 2019: Exclusive Interview with Ryan Parrott (Part II: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor
It’s Cowabunga Time! We are excited to share the second half of our exclusive SDCC 2019 interview with writer Ryan Parrott (Go Go Power Rangers, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers). In addition to his work on the main Boom! Studios Power Rangers titles, Ryan is also launching the first comic crossover between the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Check out Part I of our interview here (covering Mighty Morphin and Go Go ongoing titles), and continue on to Part II below:

ComicsOnline: Congratulations on the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. It is amazing that you are getting to do this story. We know there have been Batman/TMNT books previously, but how did this particular team-up come about? Was it a pitch from you?
Ryan Parrott: The way this came about was that Go Go Power Rangers was ending and I wasn’t writing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers at the time. I really wanted to do another book in the Power Rangers Universe and I thought “wouldn’t it be cool if there was a Power Rangers/TMNT crossover”? (Laughs) But wait… there’s a twist! I called Dafna Pleban (Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios) just to pitch it, and the conversation went like this:
Dafna: We aren’t sure what we are doing next, but we are really busy with the crossover right now.
Ryan: (Pause) What crossover?
Dafna: Oh, Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
Ryan: Oh my God! I was LITERALLY calling you to see if I could pitch for that book! I will do anything you want, but please, please, please. I grew up watching those show. Please let me do that!
Thankfully I have a really great relationship with the team and we started pitching around some ideas. Power Rangers and The Turtles are two of the pillars of my childhood. If you look at five big shows from that time, it was Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men: The Animated Series, Gargoyles, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They have so much in common: the color schemes, the consistent villains, the monsters/mutants, the foot soldiers…There are so many mirrors to each other that it just felt obvious to make this crossover. It has been one of the most fun things to write…ever.
ComicsOnline: Next important question: Who is your favorite Turtle?
Ryan Parrott: Raphael of course (laughs). For me, he was my favorite Turtle as a kid. I liked him before he got cool like in the movie. I liked him in the cartoon because of the sais. But Michelangelo and Donatello together are the two most fun to write.
With this story, it’s all about teenagers. The themes that are there are inherent.
