SDCC 2018: Her Universe Fashion Show

by Emma Smith, Reporter

On July 19, 2018, Her Universe held its 5th Annual Fashion Show during San Diego Comic-Con. Ashley Eckstein, the brains behind the show and Her Universe itself, opened the show in a Nightmare Before Christmas inspired gown designed by Andrew MacLaine. MacLaine created the piece using hundreds heads from Jack Skellington Funko Pops.

As surprise guests go, there couldn’t have been a greater crowd pleaser than the new Doctor Who herself, Jodie Whittaker.

Ultimately three winners were crowned.

The Judges Winner – Cynthia Kirkland with a The Shape of Water inspired design

The Audience Winner – Kiristi Siedow-Thompson with an Aliens inspired design

The Singer (sewing machine) Winner – Jane Burton with a design inspired by Howl’s Moving Castle.

High levels of imaginative design in both concept and technique was all over the show this year – from a completely hand-knitted design inspired by Star Wars to an LED homage to Coco to a coat with Godzilla scales.

There are some pop culture inspiration that seems to turn up every year – Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Disney just to name a few.

But it is a joy to also see the more unexpected takes. In addition to the variety seen in this years winners, there were also designs inspired by Teen Titans and Space Mountain.

As fashion increasingly incorporates elements of fandom and pop culture, it is a true joy to see emerging artists get a chance to showcase their designs and compete for the chance to design a collection. We’re looking forward to what they will come up with!
