ComicsOnline is back with more exclusive coverage from San Diego Comic-Con 2016! Our reporters boldly traveled into unknown, as we were invited to attend the World Premiere of Star Trek Beyond. A limited number of attendees and VIPs gathered for the special event at San Diego’s Embarcadero (located behind the San Diego Convention Center), and were treated to the first ever outdoor IMAX screening.

If the outdoor IMAX component wasn’t cool enough, the show featured the San Diego Symphony Orchestra performing an epic rendition of the Star Trek Overture (complete with laser show and fireworks), as well as a live performance of the ENTIRE score for the duration of  the film! If we hadn’t been informed, there would have been no way to tell that the score was being played live. The San Diego Symphony Orchestra’s performance was incredibly impressive, and the balance of the audio mix between the live music and the sound track elements was seamless.

The World Premiere was full of surprises, and kicked off with special guest MC Conan O’Brien introducing the talent from the film.  Cast members John Cho, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoë Saldana, Karl Urban, Sofia Boutella, and Idris Elba were all in attendance, along with Director Justin Lin and Producer J.J. Abrams.

Prior to the screening, the cast and crew also had a touching moment of silence for both of their missing friends: Anton Yelchin and Leonard Nimoy.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
