Blu-Ray Review: Ted 2 Unrated

 Ted-2

by Joe Iconic, Reporter

Ted 2 Unrated one-ups the original with this laugh out loud sequel!  Fans of Family Guy, the Cleveland Show, and Ted will enjoy this live-action anthem to irreverence.  The Thunder Buddies take on Ted’s faltering marriage, John looking for a new love, and the entire legal system.  The over-the-top potential of friendship, the magic of childhood nostalgia, and grown-ups behaving badly are the usual wonderfully offensive ingredients of Seth MacFarlane humor done right.

If inappropriate humor is your cup of tea, Ted 2 Unrated is your brew.  Cameos of awesome people would be a dangerous drinking game with this movie, as Ted 2 Unrated has a plethora of stars. Tom Brady, Sam J. Jones/Flash Gordon, Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, are amongst the hordes of celebrities.   Most of the actors have no problem with making fun of themselves, which makes them even more likable.

Amanda Seyfried is especially relatable as the pot loving lawyer.  She has great chemistry with Mark Walberg, but rolls with at least three your-eyes-look-like Gollum jokes.  Replacing Mila Kunis as the main love interest had to be the biggest casting challenge of Ted 2 Unrated, and Seyfried slips seamlessly into a comedic support role.  If for no other reason, watch Ted 2 Unrated  for Amanda Seyfried; she is brilliant.

Another brilliant element of Ted 2 Unrated is the re-creation of New York Comic-Con as a part of the story.  Actual comic con vendors were recruited and scheduled for the scenes.  Banners for Boom Studios and other fan favorites added authenticity and true geek cred to Ted 2 Unrated as the most faithful to recreating a Comic Con in mainstream movies.  MacFarlane knows his fan demographic include a large number of my fellow geeks.  Family Guy fans except a celebration of geek pop culture, and the Comic-Con sequence of Ted 2 Unrated offers so much fan service, you will want to stop the movie and re-watch the Big Fight Scene just to enjoy all the references made by cosplayers. Kirk fighting Picard, Marty smacking Doc Brown in the face with a hover board, and many other Easter Eggs await.   Patrick Warburton and Michael Dorn cosplaying as the Tick and Worf to bully geeks is pure comedy genius.

Feature Commentary

Overall:

The main criticism of Ted was that it was a longer, live-action sequence of Family Guy, even using some of the same jokes.  The same naysayers will no doubt say the same of Ted 2 Unrated, but not the MacFarlane fans.  First of all, Ted 2 Unrated is not Family GuyTed 2 is set in the Boston working class.  Second of all, the formula of self-depreciating cameos, running gags, pop culture nostalgia, geek celebration, and adult humor that finds nothing sacred is a winning combination.   Family Guy fans never need approval from the masses, and will find Ted 2 Unrated to be another great nihilistic adventure.  Ted 2 Unrated is just in time to take a break from the holidays and laugh loudly.

Rating: ★★★★★

Joe is a husband, #girldad, and Orphan of Apollo. He has drawn critters since riding the bus in 5th grade, and they have appeared on notes to loved ones, graffiti in a Latin classroom (sorry Rev. Dr Clark!), training slides for work, a newsletter in Alaska, and notes to his wife Tracy, who encouraged him to share them with the world. Contains pop culture references, stuff from the news, but mostly bad dad jokes.
