Blu-Ray Review: Knock Knock

Knock Knock

by Emil Favila, Reporter

The latest effort from director Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever), comes a new home invasion thriller staring Keanu Reeves titled Knock Knock.   Reeves plays family man Evan, who stays at home to work on Father’ Day.  While his wife and two kids go off to the beach, two girls knock on his door claiming to be lost  He lets them in making the worst decision of his life.

Though not a huge Eli Roth fan, I’ve always appreciated the humor he writes into his movies such as Cabin Fever. Knock Knock is a little bit of departure from his style of gore, blood and torture.   The movie manages to be suspenseful without resorting to his usual style of severed limbs and excessive blood.  His focus is more on psychological horror this time around.  The bluray featurette discusses Roth’s vision of what he had in the movie.

Knock Knock

Knock Knock is also a different kind of role for Keanu Reeves.  The majority of his roles consist of him being in control like in the Matrix, John Wick, and Speed.  In here, Evan is powerless against everyone from his wife, kids, the two girls, and even his next door neighbor. Knock Knock is a movie about the main character being dominated in all aspects of his life.  Reeves gives a great performance.

Knock Knock

Knock Knock‘s special features include audio commentary by Eli Roth, Lorenza Izzo, Nicolas Lopez and Colleen Camp, deleted scenes and alternate ending. stills gallery, and “The Art of Destruction: The Making of Knock Knock.”  I haven’t gotten a chance to watch with the movie commentary yet but I did enjoy the featurette and the alternate and deleted scenes.  I really liked the alternate ending but I can see why they left it out.  Roth really wants the ending to be open to the interpretation for the audience on what Reeve’s fate is.

Knock Knock

If you’re not a huge fan of Eli Roth, I highly recommend giving him a chance with Knock Knock.  I was impressed with his vision for the film and I’m sure you will too.  For fans of his other films such Hostel and the most recent The Green Inferno, you’ll  appreciate Roth not doing the same movie again and again.  Be sure to pick up your copy of Knock Knock on Amazon December 8th!
